Re: My Message in a Bottle, found

And yet i seem to find mostly plastic floating around our oceans and washed up on our beaches. The one floating glass bottle I've come across in 35 plus years on the water i happily recovered to see if there was a message. There wasnt but i happily took it ashore anyhow. It was from cuba and had barnacles on it pretty neat anyways. I guess its your perspective that matters. If everyone alive sailed the same boat you have or did the same thing at the same moment would you still do it?

Good for you. Do you throw glass bottles in the water without sinking them or breaking them up?

If a bottle is thrown overboard and never found, is it littering?
- Zen and the art of littering...

For non-message containing bottles I subscribe to the smash and drop method.

I can agree that 10 bottles in a single passage may be OTT especially if everyone did it. Sort of like the spam of note in a bottle endeavors.

Either way glass is an inert material which has no negative environmental impact, unlike plastic.

Re: My Message in a Bottle, Found

Seems like a plastic bottle would last a lot longer with a message in it, and, therefore, have a greater chance of being found.

Re: My Message in a Bottle, Found

Congratulations Wendi. Pity you ran out of wine before halfway across, but with your crew I guess it was necessary!

Not under the newest MARPOL regs. They changed this year. Not even all food stuff goes over. I just found this out.

Re: My Message in a Bottle, Found

I hate to be the damp squib here but wendi you have broken the law and the ARC rally had no right to tell you what you could throw over board In 1988 MARPOl law 73/78 Annex V (IMO / UN ) was brought in and this law has been consistently amended on several occasions since then , and the last revision of the law was posted in January 2013 and in simple terms you are not allowed to throw cardboard, solid objects , the list goes on it is a min $50,000 fine so I hope for your sake no one from IMO/UN or a country government maritime agency reads this

Re: My Message in a Bottle, Found

I would think of a glass bottle as a floating fish aggregation device with a positive environmental spinoff. Plastic is another matter entirely.

Richard.

It doesn't mater if it is reusable or recyclable

Here Is a fact it takes 250 to 300 years for aluminium tin foil to degrade in sea water it takes 450 years for plastic to degrade in sea water

Re: My Message in a Bottle, Found

We toss millions of tons of plastic, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, etc, into the ocean every year to float around. The vast majority of it sits just feet from the shore and usually in the nicest shore side real estate in the world. Most of the time we add engines and sails to this huge amount of plastic and post on great forums all about it. In fact a Seawind 1000 is a perfect example.
