I was about to say the same thing. It's not just the extreme examples you've shown - lots of younger women these days sporting full arm sleeves and for some strange reason, massive tats on their thighs. Not a fan, but to each their own.

How is it that the boat is going downwind and the masthead flag is streaming aft?

He was about to be become a commissioned officer and tats would be frowned upon in the Officers Mess. He went though some painful laser surgery to try and remove them, but it wasn't completely successful.

I don't have any tats, but do think they look tacky.

You would need two paper bags to sleep with babes like this, known as double baggers. One for her and one for you, incase hers fell off
Maybe closing in on triple-bagger status, i.e. hang one outside the window in case a peeping Tom comes by.
Could even be getting into coyoye-date territory.

Re: Tattoos for Sailors - Good or bad?

I started getting ink when I was in my mid-fifties. I currently have eight pieces and every single one of them has meaning to me, whether it was a tribute to my late father or related to my work or a subject I am passionate about. They all say something about me.

Re: Tattoos for Sailors - Good or bad?

It IS a matter of choice, and of the times, I think. But people's bodies do change as they age (if they do). When the collagen goes away from your skin, you get saggy wrinkles if you were large from muscle or fat. How that looks, or if it bothers you is for you to consider and then do what you want. I do think there's less social stigma about tats on men than on women.

We knew a guy in Fiji who had a really neat dragon tattooed on his back, and he was quite proud of it. We took a picture of it for him so he could see for himself how it looked on his back.

One should probably avoid it if one is having a mid-life crisis...but even that would as fstbttms wrote, would say something about you.

One should probably avoid offering opinions about what others should do (or not do) with their bodies.

I disagree. When you place tattoos on parts of your body that can be seen in public, you are inviting comment about the wisdom of your choices.

So when you cover your face and neck with amateurish and/or gaudy tattoos, you should expect that some people will find your appearance ugly and your judgment flawed.

Yeah, some tattoos can be tasteful or at least inoffensive. Others can hold personal meaning to the person. But frankly, to my 70-year-old eyes, covering your body with a jumble of inked images is likely to just make you look awful.

But, whatever. I can always look the other way. The living canvas will have to deal with the fallout of poor choices for the rest of his/her life.

So you would have no problem with someone judging you for being overweight or old, correct?

These days tattoos are no longer the mark of a sailor.. just another in the crowd..
Like the ear ring.. once it was the mark of a sailor..
Today it just says whether you give or take..

Neither of those adornments were ever exclusive to sailors.

I don't say it defensively because I don't give a sh*t what you think about my (or anybody else's) tattoos. I said it because you clearly think that men wearing an earring or sporting ink have appropriated certain cultural traditions, which is ridiculous.
