50 Amp to 30 Amp Adapter or "Pigtail"

Folks,

We have a 30 Amp shore power set up on our boat with 30 Amp shore power cords. We occasionally rent a slip where only 50 Amp service is available, yet would like to be able to connect to bring our AGM house batteries up to a full charge.

Does anyone have such a "critter" lying around that they have no use for and would be willing to part with for a reasonable price? gts1544 - George

Be aware there are 2 common types of adapters for 50 amp to 30 amp. The plug configuration is different for 50A 125V and 50A 125/250V. Check West Marine Advisor to see the difference.

Re: 50 Amp to 30 Amp Adapter or "Pigtail"

Tayana42,

Thanks for the heads up as I am no shore power guru. We are based in the BVI's and sail the USVI's and Puerto Rico as well. Does anyone have any advice for that area as to which type of 50 Amp service is more common down there? All of these areas are on 125 VAC power ashore.

Additionally, I need the 50 AMP pedestal end to be male, while the 30 Amp end should be female, which may be standard. As I said, I am no guru! George

Re: 50 Amp to 30 Amp Adapter or "Pigtail"

Once you figure out which configuration you need for the male ( dock side ) end, you can purchase the ends from one of the big home stores relatively cheaply. The boat side is ( IIRC ) a NEMA 30 R twist lock.

I have converted an old , shore power cord by installing new ends. To do it properly you should add a small enclosure to your pigtail, capable of mounting a 30 amp breaker at the dock end to protect the cord and your boat up to your ac breaker.

Please do this right and properly protect the boat. The fire you prevent .........will likely start at your shore power receptacle .
