Angry FYI Stolen Garmin 741xs Chartplotter

This is not for sale, just a FYI, my chartplotter was stolen from my boat while stored at Indiantown Marina, in Florida in about the last month.

Garmin GPSMAP 741xs, serial number 3888357799

It has All US/Canada maps. They did not steal the mounting hardware, just the plotter itself.

Argh .... more boat bucks!

Re: FYI Stolen Garmin 741xs Chartplotter

I have heard about many thefts of electronics from Indiantown. Wouldn’t leave my boat there unattended.

Like I always say, Florida is definitely not a safe place as far as crime goes. You will get robbed blind here. You cannot leave things unattended anymore.

Re: FYI Stolen Garmin 741xs Chartplotter

My theory is that Garmin representatives are going around and stealing all their old unsupported chart plotter‘s. That way they can sell you a new chart plotter that they’ll stop supporting in a couple of years and do the whole thing over again

"Location, location, location" does not just apply to real estate.

True. True. It gets a little suspect anywhere below 30 deg North. Ha ha.

Re: FYI Stolen Garmin 741xs Chartplotter

Marine electronic theft is done by organized thieves. It's a big problem.

Garmin (and I believe Furuno) now lets you set up a PIN in many chartplotters that must be entered to turn it on. It was in a 2020 software update so may be available in many existing chartplotters. Removes all black market value. As word spreads among professional thieves - which has likely happened already - these units won't be worth the time to steal.

Bummer, I've had 2 boats there for a year with no problems, work yard or storage yard? Was the boat locked or plotter in the cockpit?

Good thing to implement, but useless if Glassdog's theory is correct[emoji4]
