LMR-400 Ultraflex Coaxial Cable

New cable, never used, good condition. Professionally terminated with soldered and heat shrunk PL-259 connector on one end. At least 75 feet in length, probably closer to 80 feet. $120 plus shipping.

Just a word of warning that this stuff is thick - 3/8" in diameter - so it may not work to fish it through as an easy replacement for RG-8X.

Bump. This item is still available and I'd love to get it to a new home soon.

Yes, I know. It was a rhetorical question in the Socratic method.

In the spirit of Full disclosure - foam readily absorbs water and is easily deformed and therefore considered a dubious choice for boats.

Put it up on eham.net. It will be snatched up quickly. Its the choice for rotating antennas on towers.

Re: LMR-400 Ultraflex Coaxial Cable

Still the best performance cable suitable for masthead installations. Yes it has a foam dielectric but it isn’t hard to weatherproof, which should be done with other cable as well.

It bothers me that you guys post this on someone’s for sale thread. I even think the practice is rude and doesn’t belong on CF.

I think you are confusing Socratic Method with Sarcastic Method.

Also, there is no place for a rhetorical question in Socratic questioning whose questions are explicitly posed to be answered.

So you lose this thread deservingly as you sniped it anyway.

LMR400UF is fine for mast applications. Closed cell nitrogen filled polyethylene foam.

Sailing forum. I have come to expect sniping, rudeness, etc. Similar to stolen toilet paper, catsup, etc. from restaurants in marinas. )))))

Re: LMR-400 Ultraflex Coaxial Cable

Difference between LMR400 VS RG8

Although LMR400 cable has low loss, it is thicker and less flexible than RG58 or LMR240 cable, making it more difficult to work with. Meanwhile, the impedances of LMR400 and RG8 are both 50 Ohm. The major differences between the LMR400 and RG8 are the attenuation and frequency. The Attenuation at 1 GHz of LMR400 is 4.25 dB, while the Attenuation at 1 GHz of RG8 is 8 dB. Additionally, the maximum frequency of LMR400 is 6 GHz, while the maximum frequency of RG8 is 1 GHz. What’s more, the maximum operating temperature of LMR400 is 85 deg C, while the maximum operating temperature of RG8 is 80 deg C. LMR-400 was designed to replace low-quality RG-8 wires because it offers greater flexibility, a simpler connection, and the lowest signal loss. In general, the LMR-400 can be utilized in any application where low signal loss is required.

Re: LMR-400 Ultraflex Coaxial Cable

In the real world, foam dielectric life isn’t measurably different than solid. I installed 90’ of LMR-400UF in 1998. In 2019, a bilge pump clogged and filled the area where the coax was connected at the base of the mast. So the cable and connectors were completely ruined. When the cable was pulled out, as a test, I cut it back until the aluminum foil was in good condition (about 8’). When comparing the loss in the old cable with the new, the difference was only a couple of tenths of a db. Well within measurement error.
