Monitor Windvane & MRud Package

You will not find a previously-owned Monitor of this era (11/2000) with as little use as this one. It was used for one trip from the Puget Sound to San Francisco and back, then just hung on the stern for twenty years. It was removed from a late 80’s Caliber 38, a vessel with a slight reverse transom and is in remarkable condition.

The MRud emergency rudder system that goes with it has never been used and still has some of the original packing materials on the upper part. The bracket used to stabilize it still has the original bubble wrap on it.

I have purchased $439 of new parts for it to bring it up to the current Scanmar standard, as follows:

-New heavy weather airvane, the blue smaller one. The original from that era was made from birch plywood and had warped over time. It is now the same material as the larger, light air red vane and is what Scanmar delivers with a new Monitor. See pics.

-New upper and lower mounting brackets, including the hull mounting fasteners and fender washers.

-New windvane clamp knobs. The old ones worked fine and will be included as spares, but I changed them because the originals appeared a little aged. See pics

-New Delrin flanged bearing and Delrin washer for the windvane yoke-to-base joint, as the originals were showing signs of decay. The new ones will last another twenty years. There are also two new spacer bearings to ensure proper fit, if required. Shown in pics, buyer to install at their convenience.

-There are fresh, unused 18’ pendulum control lines to be taken from the MRud kit, so the buyer will have to replace those to use (hopefully not) the MRud emergency rudder.

There are three safety tubes included in this package. The one currently installed is a Standard -1.25”, so slightly shorter than standard. There are also two Standard tubes (14” overall) included. If a longer than standard is required it will have to be purchased separately.

Because the upper mounting tubes are fairly long (20”), this Monitor can be easily configured to a wide variety of transoms. It could be used as-is for any slightly reversed transom like the original mounted Caliber 38 or the uppers can be shortened a little for any plum, canoe or round stern (i.e. Valiant, Tashiba, Baba, older Hallber-Rassy etc.) It could also be mounted on a traditional counter transom by adding longer lower tubes. Those are just 1.25” o.d. 316 stainless tubes and can be sourced from numerous suppliers. The safety tubes mentioned above are standard 1.5” o.d. 316 stainless tubes as well. Note that this unit also comes with diagonals. See pics.

Other than any modifications required to the mounting tubes, this Monitor is ready to be put into action immediately upon mounting.

The buyer will need to add a 1/8” dacron line to the remote control wheel. These are not delivered with any new Monitor, as they are always custom length to the user’s own design.

There is not a cruising spares kit included in this package.

The price for the both the Monitor and MRud emergency rudder is $3,300. I will separate them at $2,700 for the Monitor and $700 for the MRud. The prices above are firm, cash only. Local pickup only, in Anacortes, WA. You would have to highly motivate me to ship this thing and you’re not going to like providing that much motivation. [emoji23]

I will be in the Anacortes, WA area to do the transaction for about another week, then back in the area in late August.

Hi, Is this Monitor still available and would you be in the area July 23 through 26th? We will be in Seattle then and may want to check it out for our PSC Crealock 37.
