Re: Motor will not start

We just had a similar-sounding issue - engine running ok, taken back to tickover to avoid fishing gear, engine stopped as if stopped by fuel cut-off switch (it wasnt - it just stopped by itself). Will not restart.
Turned out to be the injector pump drive shaft had sheared. Sorry!
FWIW, we are in the Dominican Republic in Barahona, and got fantastic service from Roberto, contact via the “marina”.

Re: Motor will not start

motor will not start.
For my M-25
Comes in several versions.
1.Doesn't crank. Check battery connections
2. cranks but very slow. Check battery connections. check for corrosion in battery cables
3. Cranks at normal speed but does not start.

A. Crack "B" nut where steel pipe connects to injector on one of the cylinders
B crank and check for SOLID fuel exiting and NOT foam.
C. If you have foam you are feeding air into the injector pump, probably a loose clamp at one of the hose connections leading to the electric fuel pump. The injector pump is pulverizing the air into foam. The foam bubbles compress and delay the high pressure pulse arriving at the injector and cause it to be late. Its kind of like bad timing on spark plugs. The pulse must arrive at piston TDC or you don't get a fire.

How do you stop your engine?

If you stop by pushing a button, it’s a good chance that the solenoid is energized to **** off the fuel.

If you stop by turning off the key, there’s a good chance that the solenoid must be energized to deliver fuel.

Re: Motor will not start

to stop motor key is turned backwards and is spring loaded
If I have fuel at the injectors dose this mean stop solenoid is not jammed on?

I’d get to the bottom of this before going anywhere too adventurous.

That sounds like you sucked up some air and didn’t do a through job of bleeding the injectors.

Re: Motor will not start

Congratulations on getting the motor running again. Some motors are difficult to bleed fully fully especially when going all the way in to change the secondary filter element.

Using WD40 as starting fluid is something to keep in mind especially if you are in a tight spot and need to do a quick bleed/restart.

Never heard of the spray fluid you used to start the motor and learned something new on this one. Did look it up and it said you could use it on diesels but did see it contained 24% ether. IMO I wouldn't use an ether based starting fluids in a diesel motor as the highly flammable ether could cause a pre-detonation during compression and possibly damage the motor.

Whenever you get a chance look for a can of WD40 (or similar) to keep w/your onboard arsenal.

Try some WD40 sprayed into air intake, then try to start. Should fire up on the WD40 and may possibly pull the final bit of air out of fuel lines.

Glow plugs working?

Any water in the oil? If you are excessively cranking the motor, shut off water intake until it starts to run.

This would my best suggestion. If it fires, then it's a fuel delivery issue. If not, it's compression or something else.

Good luck with it.

Re: Motor will not start

I had a similar situation. Everything engine side looked fine during the trouble shooting. It ended up being a very fine hairline crack in the fuel line. And I mean hair line. just enough to let air in. Seems the engine vibration would cause it to open and close, as I could get it running again, but seconds later it would die out. Just a thought.

Re: Motor will not start

my perkins (108) refused to start after a day sail... all simple checks performed crunched down on bullet and took pump to repair shop... a week later... I picked it up... the guy even took a cheque... the problem... a 35 cent nylon washer... the bill $1000. he even kept the washer to show me... with a sense of humor.

Re: Motor will not start

I have had a MD22 and have a suggestion based upon working on the engine. The crank shaft and the cam shaft and the injector pump are all connected with a cog belt with an idler for tension. My engine would not run with alignment off by one tooth on the belt. See if your belt is worn or loose enough for a slipped tooth. You check alignment pinning the flywheel, cam and pump in alignment holes as instructed in the service manual. Get back to me if you need more details.
