Have you verified spray patterns from injectors?

Probably help if you gave a little more detail.

Like operating conditions when the engine stopped, did it stop abruptly or slowly fade, why did you change the filters, has it been giving trouble previously, any noises associated with the stop, how many hours does it have, is it normally easy or hard to start....

ANYTHING extra. I read these sorts of posts and just think "Where do I start with this?"

So I don't.

"Hey doc, i dont feel well, need immediate help!" Without giving any hint, what you expect? I read check your injectors! Might be, but you want to start your dr with open heart surgery if you maybe only have flatulence? If you have no clue look for a good book that guides you through trouble shooting. And weigh the tips here carefully, be sure, you probably can not calibrate your injection pump once disassembled

Re: Motor will not start

Motor has been running well I was running along at 1000 rpm and motor just stopped did not cough just stopped .
Once before I had a problem with fuel blockage and motor stopped .
So first thing I did was to check the filters there was a lot black gunge in the main filter bowel a reyco 1000 but the filter was not bad and the second filter was clean .
Changed both filters and used the hand pump to bleed the air then tried to start .cracked all injectors to see if I have diesel then tightened 3 and tried again
still nothing I have checked the timing belt and rechecked the motor and pump timing all are good
can a diesel pump just stop working or do they slowly loose pressure

I've seen both. Mine started to die slowly over a few weeks (salt water contamination) whereas our old Toyota 2H just went phht one day.

So, to get to the bottom of it, I'd start by cracking an injector or two and seeing if you are getting pressure to the injectors when you turn the motor over on the starter.

Edit: I see that you did crack the injectors... so did they bleed?

Edit again: And if they did, then I'd check to see if valve gear is operating as you turn the engine over. Could be a timing chain. My engine drives the pump from a gear so the timing chain could fail but the pump would still work.

Re: Motor will not start

Is the engine turning on starter?

Check ALL fuses associated with the engine

Start checking the stop solenoid. Should not be the problem as the injectors bleed, but check it anyway.

Next, check the air filter. Probably not the problem, as engines with clogged air filters normally start anyhow, but check it.

The oil is OK, I mean no water in the oil and level correct?

Check compression.

These were the easy checks, if they are OK, turn engine over by starter and check if the injectors bleed. Make sure they are bleeding diesel, not water.....

If this is Ok, the lift pump should be OK also.

Next step would be the injection pump or governor. Injection pumps fail rarely, and if they fail, normally through water in the fuel.

Re: Motor will not start

Check bleed again to ensure no bubbles going to the injector/clean fuel stream.

Try some WD40 sprayed into air intake, then try to start. Should fire up on the WD40 and may possibly pull the final bit of air out of fuel lines.

Glow plugs working?

Any water in the oil? If you are excessively cranking the motor, shut off water intake until it starts to run.

Re: Motor will not start

A long shot, but anyhow. Check that your return fuel line is not blocked. Easiest by blowing through it. A blocked return will normally prevent the motor from starting. Depends a little on the motor.

Can happen, if the hoses get old, and some rubber comes loose.

Re: Motor will not start

All good points above especially the **** off, but if you’ve found black silt in your filters it may be possible that some contaminated fuel made its way through and blocked your injectors. Pull them from the block and check the spray. Doesn’t take much to block one.

Hopefully not, because that would mean that contaminated fuel reached the injection pump. NOT GOOD! Actually, there might be a small brass mesh filter at the injection pump inlet. Some motors have this, not sure about Perkins. Check this out also.

Anyhow, if you need spares, these are Perkins engines, so do not source these from Volvo, unless you are very rich.

OP indicated the secondary filter was checked and found clean.

Re: Motor will not start

He just replaced both filters as well. possible contamination, checking spray pattern is pretty high up on the easy list. That, the stop solenoid and fuses.
