Need a feathering Prop

Hello fellow boaters,

I have a 1977 Peterson 34 sloop, that I'm outfitting for a little speedy cruising. She's been sitting for a while, and was hauled "in the day" for rigging. That never happened. So, I'm working on that now. (You can see her sister boat with a Google search for "grayhawk sailboat". Same boat, similar drive train.

Purchased in the water, her ablative was dry for a few months before dropping her in (bad call on dudes part). So,.. She needs hauling too. With that in mind, I asked the diver to get a good look at her belly while scrubbing.

His response was "You have a sponge forest, and your folding prop is almost shot". He went on to tell me the blade pin was sloppy. One blade has a crack and the other has a hole!

So as I plan to cruise her. I'd like a Max-prop, Prowell etc. Feathering prop. Something with a better reverse. I'm not sure if it matters to much. However I think I'd prefer a three blade.

She appears to usually get outfitted with a 16X12RH with a one inch shaft. She is Running a 16HP Universal 5416 (Kaboda).

I've been watching EBay, Searching Craigs regularly etc. However I'm not finding what I'm looking for. SO,... I thought I'd ask here. Maybe someone knows of a good used shop local to them, or maybe a salvage company.

I'd prefer used, as New ones costs WAY to much.

Obviously I'm wanting to find this BEFORE I haul her for new paint.

Thanks for any leads.

Are you down in San Diego? I think I saved your Craig's ad yesterday.

What you have, is what I currently have. Although it does work, I'm not really a fan of the reverse on this prop. However the price is recoverable if it comes down to it. I could always sell yours after I found a good Maxprop later.

So,.. Maybe? lol

Eh?? I may change my mind and buy yours.

I just read a number of posts trying to find good data on an Autostream (build like a Maxprop). In my hunt I discovered that most Feathering props cost roughly 25% more in fuel then a folding.

So,.. 25% more fuel efficient sounds pretty appealing over a little reverse issue. I mean, How often will I go backwards anyway?

Vancefish,
May want to talk to the people at MaxProp, or other manufacturers to find out the calculated prop for your boat. Besides the motor, shaft dia. and boat specs, you'll also need to get the transmission reduction information.

We purchased a re-manufactured MaxProp (from PYI) at a significant savings w/warranty. It works great.

We also had a Martec 3 blade feathering on our previous boat and that worked well for more than 15 years. Just grease and anodes is all it took to keep it happy.

In comparison, the Martec was easier to adjust forward and reverse pitch then the MaxProp, since all the Martec adjustments were done externally and independent of each other.

Cheers.

Max Prop makes several models with external pitch adjustment.

Re: Need a feathering Prop

I have two of each of these available that were included as spares aboard the catamaran I recently purchased. Both have seen some use but it appears to be very little and they are all in excellent shape.

I wouldn't sell those Autoprops until you tired them, you might just like them.
I'd think they would be just the ticket for a Cat that often motors on one engine, but also sometimes both

Re: Need a feathering Prop

Vancefish,

I am in San Diego. I will sell it for $200 if you want it? Not sure if you need any pins or anything. It is just sitting here so could use the money..

Thanks,

Rob

Thanks Outdoorsman37.

I was planning to buy it before your offer. I'll give you the $250 as well, if you'll ship it to me. My Zip code is 95948.

Let's do this.
