Pfaff 130 sewing machine motor

A friend recently bought a Pfaff130 without a motor. She only needs it for heavy corners and leather and would like recommendations on what motor to buy. Speed isnt important but power is. Used would be fine. Any suggestions??? Thanks, Grant.

If he does not come up on his own, send a pm to SenorMechanico. He's a pro sewing machine mechanic and is generous with advice.

Re: Pfaff 130 sewing machine motor

If you REALLY want punching power, forget the motor issue and buy a Husqvarna Viking 6000 series. They were made in the '70's/'80's.
There are lots of models with varying features.
You don't need anything fancy for what you want to do, just make sure all the knobs move easily.
They were originally sold as "NEVER NEEDING OILING". Yeah, right !!

The main advantage of these machines is they have a low gear capability.
Just pull out the knob on the side where you wind a bobbin and voila ! Low gear. Slower speed sewing which will punch through almost everything.
The model 6570 even has a crude version of needle up/down auto stop.

Now THAT'S a motor !

Re: Pfaff 130 sewing machine motor

You might look at a Dayton 2M037A 1/10 hp motor or a Dayton 2M033A 1/15 hp motor if you have two mounting holes on the side of the motor 2-3/16" apart. Granger carries them and you may be able to see one in their local store.

If you have two mounting screws coming out the end of the motor see pfaff 130 motor - Sailrite Forum and Sailrite - Fabric, Canvas, and Sewing Machines Since 1969 .

Sailrite and others sell a 'L' shaped mounting bracket ( Sailrite - Fabric, Canvas, and Sewing Machines Since 1969 ) that may be of use.

Check your dimensions.

Senormechanico, thank you. I suspect the Viking is way out of her budget but very nice machines. Muroch. I will look into those sights after I get to the shop and do measurements. Thanks. _____Grant.

$100 to $300 including shipping from eBay ought to get you a decent one, but it's better if you can find one in person to make sure all the knobs move easily.

Re: Pfaff 130 sewing machine motor

I am really surprised. I just looked thru Ebay and expected anything with the name Husqvarna to have a high price tag. I will talk to my friend and let her decide. Looking at Ebay I see the older Viking model 21s which is what I think I have stuffed in some corner of my storeroom. My mom bought it in the 50s and sewed leather and dozens of square dance dresses. I need to find it and clean it up. I dont think it has been used in 40 years or more. Thanks again. _____Grant.

Re: Pfaff 130 sewing machine motor

I also have a Viking -- a Viking 6430 that belonged to my stepmother. The free arm is not really needed for boat projects, but I have the extension plate that goes around the free arm and better yet the folding sewing table that the machine sets in with its needle plate level with the top of the table. As Senormechanic said, the two speed drive is nice to have and is a great help in sewing thick materials. The only problem I have had was breaking part of the thread takeup assembly (the crank stud) when using a lot of top tension with large diameter (V-92) thread. I got a pretty severe lecture from the sewing machine repairman about misusing a fine machine. In the end I replaced the crank stud and slide myself. There is a Yahoo Group vikingsewingmachinespre1980 that I have found to be quite useful.

For my heavy sewing I am now using a Sailrite Sailmaker for which I have both a portable case and an industrial table. I have not broken it yet.
