AIS uses the very end of the VHF spectrum: 162. When we hooked ours up to a standard VHF antenna, we got poor reception, and connectivity errors. Talking to Raymarine, they recommended an antenna specifically made for AIS. This is a fairly common problem, and why a splitter solution isn't a great solution.
