Rent Dinghy For New Years Eve, Sydney

Hello,

I am looking to rent/buy a small boat/Dinghy for New Years eve in Sydney Australia.

I am an avid boater in the U.S. with a 51 foot Sea Ray and a Zodiac Tender with 30hp outboard.

I would love to see if anyone is willing to rent a boat for the evening or a few days for my girlfriend and I to enjoy the fireworks and harbor.

willing to setup any agreement/deposit to make both parties comfortable.

Please contact me anytime!

Thanks so much! -Nick

unfortunately cannot assist with more than some advice.

i've done NYE on sydney harbour many times and these days would not try it on anything smaller than 30'. seriously crowded with rude lunatics...dangerous for a small boat

cheers,

Sadly, on Sydney Harbour on new years eve, crazy is an understatement.

We did this some years ago, leaving the boat in Balls Head Bay and going across to "ground zero" by our 3.5 m Zodiac. The fireworks were great, but the return trip was damn scary. Would not do it again... unlit fast motorboats careening around, populated by drunks or worse, BIG motor yachts throwing huge wakes and apparently not seeing us at all and general pandemonium all over the harbour.

It was... stimulating!

The couple of times that I have done it I anchored in Athol bay by the zoo, arriving a day or so early to securely anchor somewhat out of the way and still managed to have a large cruiser drift into me at about three am and had so many clueless mini cruiser type power boats creating wakes all day I vowed never to do it again. It was a great fireworks show though, and listening to the sounds of the zoo animals at night in the middle of Sydney was very cool.

What we did to get back to Ball's Head Bay, where we had left the mother boat, was park close in behind a large, fast motorboat, and rode his stern wave most of the way across the harbour, till we were most of the way back. It was indeed, scary.

It would be accurate to state that the watchkeeping standards left a great deal to be desired.

Re: Rent Dinghy For New Years Eve, Sydney

It's a very viable plan, and I have done similar a number of times. I've sadly cut back my number of boats, but have shot you a PM in case I can help.

My advice is to stage off a beach area close to where you want to watch from. Only head out during the actual fireworks, and avoid all the fuss but get a great view.

For example, some friends and I did it in a 5m Zodiac. Partied on a beach near Balls Head, then headed out just before the fireworks. There was very little wind so we didn't even worry about anchoring. There is also no wash since everyone is anchored up and not moving at that point. You also have plenty of time to get back to your nearby beach before the harbour goes crazy as everyone leaves.

In my experience, the west side of the harbour is much calmer. And it's easy to get a good view and be close to the fireworks barges. Last time we had a full view of the bridge plus one of the big barges, and fireworks from a smaller barge exploding almost over us.

Great memories, and will be out there again this year!
