Sewing Machine

Looking for a relatively portable sewing machine for general marine canvas work.

A Sailmaker - Read's or Sailrite - is a first choice, but will consider other well built machines up to the task as well - Sailrite, Pfaff, Singer, etc.

Any advice /experiences with particular machines would be appreciated as well

Re: Sewing Machine

I have a Thompson PW301. It is a well-made sturdy strong machine that resembles the Sailrites, but pre-dates them. They are walking foot, straight-stitch only, no zig-zag. They pop up on eBay at a fraction of the price of better-known brands. If you search eBay for "walking foot sewing machine" you can see other lesser-known brands that may do the trick without breaking the bank.

Re: Sewing Machine

I have a reeds that will need a good cleaning and a drive belt. No top for the carry case.
It's in Tampa now but could be brought north when I come back May 2020.
Not looking for much for it,
Offer?
Paul

Re: Sewing Machine

Nothing for sale but some advice: my heavy duty Singer has been excellent. Not too expensive either.

The Thompson is the original of this type but I don't think they're still made. The Sailrite LS(Z)1 is a beefed up copy of the Thompson and is available in straight only or straight/zig zag. The Rex and Barracuda are essentially the same but not "beefed up", and are about 1/3 the price of the Sailrite. Be aware Sailrite beefed them up for a reason, there are a few parts in the cheaper ones that probably will break. But, the beefed up parts are available from Sailrite and are not expensive, and they are drop in replacements if you are at all handy. I've had to replace two parts on my Rex and it works as well as a Sailrite. I also added the Sailrite Monster Wheel, it halves the speed and doubles the torque. Increases power and controllability.

Shipping might be a little prohibitive but someone local could snag quite a bargain if machine is in good condition.

Re: Sewing Machine

Google Family Sew or Reliable Barracuda.
The Reliable is now sold by Amazon and Defender.
I've had a Chinese version (straight stitch only, but 9" throat) for about 20 years or so, and made everything from car cover tarps to cockpit enclosures.
Sewing Machines Plus in San Diego sells a 9" throat zig zag version for 400 bucks, but with no case.
