Except the Springs, they would need to be custom-made at a capital cost of $6000. I talked to him about it they were understandably not interested in pursuing it. they are a little grumpy towards ABI as this is actually a clone of one of their older windlasses rather than a modified SL555.

It is an ABI, tag is on the end of the rope drum.

Re: Solid Bronze Manual Windlass

I had this windlass on Jacaranda for an extended cruise thru the SP in the 90’s. It is an ABI windlass that has an oil bath. Uses 90 weight gear oil and each shaft has orings on each end. Springs were a problem but am sure you could find similar springs using google.

I do remember not eating breakfast before departing from some lagoons in FP. With a depth of 70’ and 240’ of chain out I was completely knackered after cranking all that chain in. Whew!

The first day of using our Lighthouse 12V windlass i was like the Cheshire cat )

Regards

Re: Solid Bronze Manual Windlass

I never fail to be amused by some of the folk who subscribe to this forum. In the automotive business the majority of responders to this ABI windlass offer would be viewed as "tire kickers" but I guess in the boating world they would better be known as "bumper kickers" … all trying to get something of value for next to nothing. Only a few honest folk out there who openly admit they can't really afford the asking price.
That bronze windlass was, and still is, worth every penny of the $1000 first asked and here we are, about a year later and still we have people asking "is your windlass still for sale?" If this were not so pathetic it would be funny. I'm sure 'Gilbert & Sullivan' could write a comic operetta about it.

I have a boat and a lot of sailboat gear I wish to dispose of and I run into this kind of "bargaining" all the time and yet, I find if I ignore the bumper kickers, eventually someone will pay my asking price. So why not recognize a good deal when you first see it instead of playing the merry-go-round game of "is it still for sale?" … If it's priced fairly, it is not going to get cheaper with time. I need to recover at least a portion of what I paid for these items and I believe most of you would think similarly were you the one selling the item(s).

Here's how I price items for sale; All quality brand name items
NEW items:- priced at approximately 2/3 of retail price paid, excluding taxes paid.

USED items:- priced at approximately 1/2 of retail price paid, excluding taxes paid.

ALL prices are negotiable 'within reason' … in other words, depending on how much a buyer is purchasing … but if you are buying only one item, forget it. I'm already discounting a fair percentage off the retail price, and losing the taxes paid at retail level and so, the price is as asked. I'm not running a charity store.
