Spot

This was on a boat I just purchased. I don't know how old the AAA batteries are, but it still turns on.

Re: Spot

Oh, that's a SPOT satellite messenger for tracking GPS on the Globalstar network. It's commonly used to send an SOS to global responder sites along with your GPS coordinates, but can also be used to check in with family or friends to let them know all is well and where you are. It is also useful for summoning roadside assistance for vehicles. It's advantage is it uses a satellite network so it can be used practically anywhere when you are off the normal communication grid.

When it works, and when the non-global satellite system works.

Re: Spot

Is GlaobalStar having problems with their satellite constellation or do you mean that their service area isn't really global?

Re: Spot

Unaware of any specific current issue with satellite network except that it is NOT global. In my experience, their gear doesn not work.

See this thread:

The InReach is a vastly superior product (I'm not in the business), and worth every penny more (in the DeLorme pricing structure - I have no idea what Garmin is now charging). The Iridium system is truly global, the coverage map on the SPOT website was created by the marketing folks. Read the fine print on that map.
