Tohatsu 18 hp 2 stroke

Strong 18 hp 2 stroke outboard with new carburetor. It was included with the purchase of a cruising sailboat. Shows little use. Reason for selling- It is a manual start and I need an electric start.

Location - Hobe Sound, Fl

$550.00

I’m not trying to spoof your sale, but have you looked at putting a starter in it? On some motors it’s not that hard, I don’t know about this one of course, but if the flywheel has starter teeth on it, maybe.

Thanks for the "adding a starter idea", hadn't thought of that.

Tohatsu 18 hp 2 stroke

Just seems to be an excellent engine to let go of, it’s actually made in Japan, and I think that in itself is uncommon now.

What I would do I do is to put a starter on it and use a very lightweight motorcycle Lifepo battery, they are usually made from A123 Cells and the power output is by how many cells you buy. A 6 Cell weighed I think about 2 lbs and easily started my Liter Superbike.

I’d then charge that from the big boat, not sure I’d install a charging system and a big, heavy car battery like is usually done. That gets heavy in the Davits and a lot to have to remove.

If the starter idea doesn’t pan out, I am interested, very interested.
Let me know if you can’t or don’t go with adding a starter.
I’d look at the weight of a comparable electric start four stroke though, the Suzuki is probably the lightest.

Re: Tohatsu 18 hp 2 stroke

Let me know if you still want to sell the motor after the previous comments. I have a good friend at Jensen Beach who would be able to take a look at it fairly quickly.

Re: Tohatsu 18 hp 2 stroke

I'm in Palm City and can look at it for any of those interested (just a few miles away).

I could even hold it for the buyer if you could pick up within 6 weeks.

Just trying to be helpful..

Tohatsu 18 hp 2 stroke

Hey now, let him decide first on the starter thing, if not I hope he gives me right of first refusal?

Re: Tohatsu 18 hp 2 stroke

yup, that is a great little motor. My 4 hp 2 stroke Johnson weighs about 30 lbs. I imagine this puppy is under 50 lbs. Someone gonna get a bargain. I don't like the smoke from 2 strokes. But i don't like the weight of the 4 strokes.
