Sailing Erie Pa to Buffalo NY, Erie Canal to Hudson River, then South to NY City Harbor to Cape May NJ then North to C & D Canal. Reedy Point DE. Need advise on where to Dock between NY Harbor to Cape May. Atlantic Ocean frightens me. Mostly with a 30 ft. Sailboat.

I would be inclined to go to Atlantic Highlands near Sandy Hook to wait for a decent weather window, saves several hours getting through New York. Leave AH with a good forecast late morning and an overnighter to Cape May. You can anchor there and go through the canal to get into Delaware Bay. In this case you want to go at the start of the flood tide so you get a boost northward. If you end up in the CD Canal after dark it is well-lit. Back to Atlantic bit, there are several inlets along the way but many are challenging. Atlantic City is good according to reports, the others not so much; hence the overnighter.

You may want to repost outside the Great Lakes forum to get more responses.

Re: 1st Time User

We did that route. The canals were great, sandy hook was a nice place to rest.
We planned to straight shot to Cape may, but aborted into barnegat because of multiple issues..... not advised.
I'm sure it's fine with correct timing of tides but it was not pleasant with our timing.
I've heard Atlantic city is good, but no personal experience. We got a little sleep anchored behind Cape may.
Once thru the c&d it gets much easier.
I'm sure you will get more experienced info.
Enjoy the trip!
