KBII Rideau Cruise 2008

Location: Big Rideau Lake just east of Narrows lock. Fourth day out. Hammered in storm first day, only made it 20 miles, lost windshield wiper in downpoor. Managed to get slip in Brockville. As soon as we tied up the clouds parted and the sun came out!

Entered Rideau on Day 2. Overnighted at Upper Brewers Lock.

Day three hung out at Seeleys Bay most of the day and anchored out overnight. Second time on the hook. Set anchor drift alarm too tight and got up half a dozen times through the night for no reason.

Plenty of boats. Most of the Quebec boats are on the way home at the end of their two week construction holiday. Seen more sailboats on the Rideau this year. Traffic is down 30-40% according to lock keepers.

Squirt adjusting well to boating life. Has some problem with not being able to see land at anchorage and determined to get off the boat any way he can but I don;t think he can swim!

Rest of the crew, well what can I say, the Admiral is constantly giving orders and Shadow just lays around like a princess! Pictures to follow soon.

I see you're still holdin' down the fort Hud! Good man!

Squirt adapting to life aboard.

Sunset at anchorage (obligatory photo)

I think I know the surveyor who did the stability calcs on this Houseboat! (PS. I guess it doesn't matter what you go in as long as you go eh?)

We were serenaded by this Singing Cowboy through a half dozen locks. I had to pay him "NOT" to play/sing any more Neil Young songs!

KBII at Seeley's Bay.

More to follow.....

Cats adapt, although reluctantly. Ours hated the engine, but found that she could deal with it by crawling into the storage space behind the cushions in the saloon to hide. She did manage to get over being seasick, though. Thank goodness!

Update! Squirt jumped ship last night and is now a resident of McNamee's point on Big Rideau Lake. We searched most of the night and all morning and he's nowhere to be found! Lil' sh*t! What's the disciplinary action for abandonment of post?

Great to see you out enjoying the boat and warm weather.

1) The singing cowboy needs a tan... or a shirt... or maybe a cockpit enclosure. ha ha

2) I like that fender on the side of that "houseboat" contraption. Wow! Guess they keep the grand piano in the stern? She seems to be squatting just a bit.

Good pictures!

Probably not the case for you, Rick, but is it possible he's hiding out? We thought our cat had jumped ship in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia, but she was just hiding down below. The noises of the marina frightened her. It's amazing how the little buggars can creep into the tiniest, most inaccessible spaces. She stayed hidden for a whole day and a night.

Hope you find Squirt!

That was the case with Shadow. She's tiny and gets into the cupboards and under the pillows and behind the settee. Squirt on the other hand is 20 lbs of furball. Just imagine Garfield the cat, that's Squirt! There's no small crannies big enough for his butt to hide in! We'll get him, eventually!

Operation "Find Squirt" begins tomorrow. We're heading back to look for him. We've printed up "Missing" posters to put up around the point and the local stores etc. that'll let us do it. So far no word if he's returned to the cottage. We had to leave our friends place because of their annual family reunion and can go back tomorrow when the dock is free.

Best of luck on your search. Positive side is cats are very self sufficient. They allow you to share their space, and when they are tired of it, they find another space for themselves. Squirt is probably more upset with you for not accommodating this indiscretion, than you are with him. Sounds like you are having a great trip.

Remember to stay off the phone, Squirt may be trying to call home.

A man absolutely hated his wife’s cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park.

As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway….

The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home.

Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat!

He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there.

Hours later the man calls home to his wife:
“Jen, is the cat there?”
“Yes,” the wife answers, “why do you ask?”

Frustrated, the man answered,
“Put that son of a b!ich on the phone, I’m lost and need directions!”

Day 5 and he's gotta be getting hungry. We'll go out again at dusk to try to find him. Neighbors have heard a cat in the woods so maybe it was him. Couple more days and he'll be a permanent resident of Big Rideau Lake township. We've printed and posted "missing" posters for 10 miles around. Not much more we can do.
