Re: Winter Boat Work|Storage|Live Space on Lake Ontario

The marina we store at allows sanding inside, provided you contain your dust so it doesn't get on the ground or neighboring boats. No open flame allowed inside though. That's pretty much the only constraint (and there's no running water available inside).

Really? Any chance you (and your marina) are up this way??

Sanding inside for the win, for sure. And yes... I see the importance of not being an animal when you work in shared spaces. Water, though... another consideration! Thanks for that tidbit of probably very necessary info!

We're in Rochester, so unfortunately a few hours away from you (and in the US).

Last I heard Port Credit Marina requires a recent survey for just about everything they do, including storage. I think they partnered with boatpoker .
I doubt they will let you work on the boat.

An idea: Several years ago a bunch of us crazy guys got together and short-term leased an empty warehouse that was for sale for a long time, it had large doors and that was pretty reasonable, good location (Mississauga), heated etc. Win-win for the owner and us.
Put a word out and you may fiind enough interested...

We do work with that marina management in a variety of matters. They are actually quite flexible on letting "responsible" people work on their boats within reasonable boundaries.

The "recent survey" thing ... well they got tired of spending tens of thousands of dollars in legal, environmental and disposal fees for the field of broken dreams that had been dumped on them.

We do not recommend working in the storage building tho' , it is cold and dark with a significant bird population.

That's an idea! Sadly, I have no boating friends. This trip.... I sail alone.

I hear "responsible." I'm not looking to rebuild it. It would just be nice to be able to do some things during the winter months. I'll feel them out... now that I know the required survey is in the rearview mirror. And the birds... ha! Many thanks!

Whoa ! I did not say no survey was required. No way will any marina let you in without insurance and you are not getting insurance without a survey.
Port Credit is tired of getting stuck with the disposal of junk and it will take a survey and insurance to even sit down with you.

I was just being flippant with my survey comment. I'm sure there are a number of things required to pull a boat up anywhere.
