Boat: So many boats to choose from. Would prefer something that is not an AWB, and that is beachable...

I personally find the "Galant 53" amongst the most attractive sailboats that is out there.
"but it has a spade rudder" someone will no say...

Re: A Full Keel Blue Water Cruiser Worthy of Living Aboard

Lessons I Learned From Boat #1:

(1) I'll never own a boat with keel bolts again. At best it's one more thing to watch out for. At worst it can result in keel failure.

(2) I'll never own a boat with a spade rudder again. Everyone focuses on the grounding aspect of this without taking into account the added stability a skeg or full keel boat has in the yaw axis when conditions deteriorate.

(3) I'll never own a boat with a large windshield/nonstandard portlights again. When new, they allow the interior to be clear and sunny. When old, they allow the interior to be cloudy and rainy.

So increasingly I'm drawn towards traditional seaworthy designs.

All designs are generally seaworthy and 1000s of fin keel and spade boats cross oceans safely.

Clorox:

Indeed! As someone said four hundred years ago: "Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem".

The chap who said it was not a seafaring man, but had he been, he'd no doubt have shared you opinion :-)!

Remember that all the expensive clobber you can buy at chandlers is NOT necessary to be safe upon the waters. It has come about as a result of "free ennerprize" merchandising's need to capture market share, and its corollary need for product differentiation.

There is no happier circumstance for a "free ennerprize" marketer than to be able to sell into a "market of ignorance". Straight Madison Avenue stuff :-)!

The FIRST thing a landsman should acquire if he wishes to become a seafaring man is a shipload of skepticism :-)!

Cheers
