Ads on Sails

Hey all!

I have this idea; how about selling ad space on your sails? Whenever you sail into a marina, you'll attract attention for the company advertising on your sails.

My idea is to sail off the Outer Banks using Beaufort, NC as a port of call. From there we will sail past the Outer Banks, all the way up to southern Virginia Beach, where we'll turn around, and head back to Beaufort. All the while, we will have a large advertisement posted on one of our sails.

So, does any thoughts on this idea?

I've seen this done at boat shows that are on the water. Advertising Hooters, Loans etc. But they pay people to just sail up and down the water front all day during the shows.

Won't you need double headsails for this ad?

I am not impressed that much by advertisements on things that you see for only a short time.

I have put the name of some of my websites on my truck using magnetic signs, and the results are not impressive. I have talked to other people using magnetic signs on vehicles, and the results were not encouraging.

I don't think anyone would pay you very much for putting a sign on your sail unless it was up eight or ten hours a day in a high traffic area. If you did that, your sail would be destroyed by UV light. Sail rot would be more expensive than the pay you recieved for the advertisement.

Now if you are a round-the-world racing yacht, the results would be different because you would get media coverage that went into magazines and television.

Google "advertising on sailboats" - some info there (if you haven't already looked).

A friend of mine and myself have explored the possibility of a dedicated boat to do off shore advertising.....we were ready to close the deal until the Econobamamy went south.

Advertising dollars just dried up......we had some great cleints lined up.

I came across this company a few years ago - and they seem to be still in business

Sailing Billboards is based in Melbourne's Docklands harbour, offering sail and boat advertising as well as brand exposure and product awareness for any businesses or corporation.

Another company used to go up and down Hong Kong Harbour in an old 60ft raceboat, but it only lasted a year or so.

It's a strange world out here, but we have two spinnakers which have been paid for by sponsors - one by a local bank (who also had the previous owner paint the entire boat a matching colour); and one by a clinic. Both companies had crew working there though, in fairly high up positions, so there may have been a slight abuse of power there.....
