Boat Name Change?

I'm thinking of changing the name of my boat. It came with the name "Plan B" when I bought it. I kind of liked the name at the time, especially since for me Plan A was an airplane.

But the recent publicity about the morning-after birth control pill has increased the number of people who take it upon themselves to poke fun at the name of my boat, which thoroughly pisses me off. I actually got in some guy's face about it 2 weeks ago.

So...before I get my skinny ass kicked, I was wondering how much bad luck I'd really be bringing down on myself by simply changing the name. The boat is federally registered.

Thoughts?

A virgin? In New York? Get real.

According to the USCG, regarding documented vessels:
"Once established, a vessel's name may not be changed without application, fees, and the consent of the Director, National Vessel Documentation Center."

So, you'll need to send in the form to the USCG to change the name. It's easy, and costs less than $100. Check out: USCG National Vessel Documentation Center, Home Page

If you're looking for ideas on a renaming ceremony, you can check out this blog post.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, Octopussy! I figured the Coast Guard would want some cash. I'll check the site and your blog.

Thanks again,

I'm doing the same thing Dennis and have spoken to many about the 'old wives tales' who say its all hogwash.

One renamed his boat three times before it sunk in a freak squall.

Thanks, Gavala. I'm thinking of repainting the hull this winter, so the timing might be right for a new name.

Re: Boat Name Change?

The whole "Plan B" thing is a shame b/c it's really a good name other than that! The only thing you'll need to do is the documentation change because there is no such thing as bad luck.
