Electrician anyone?

Hi all,

For the last thirty years I've been working as an electrician with scattered bits of VHF communications experience.

How much work do you think I would get if I sailed into a harbour and hung out a shingle offering boat electrical/ VHF communications service?

Cheers

Gary

Re: Electrician anyone?

If you're lucky you can probably earn beer money this way.

Hanging out a shingle, though, might not be the best approach. If you are in a country where you do not have the legal right to work, you may draw the ire of locals who feel you are stealing their business, and will report you to the authorities. Even in a country where you have the right to work, local businesses may not like the competition, and might pursue whether or not you have the proper business licenses, meet all local codes, etc.

What I am saying is that doing work like this is usually best done discreetly. Don't literally "hang out a shingle." Instead pass the word quietly.

Good luck.

Re: Electrician anyone?

Most liveaboards and full time cruisers do their own, only getting a professional when forced. Most doing their own wiring do it good enuf for themselves, but want perfect from you. They also help each other, usually free. The worst kind of competition. It also depends on the hourly cost and finished work.
The old saying - you do a good job and they tell nobody, a bad job and they tell everyone.
