Future boat owner-Ventura Ca....Questions

Hello to all...new to this site...I do have questions if any of you may help...thank you.

Currently 101/103 certified
Completed my 1st season of Wet Wednesdays on a J boat

1.Would like to purchase a 30' boat mostly for cruising with wife and dog
2. Interested in J30/J29 or Capri 30
3.Prefer to dry dock over slip......
4.Any place you can suggest that can dry dock and handle placing in water in either Channel Islands or Ventura Harbor....

I would greatly appreciate any feed back...

Thank you

5000 pound (or more!) boats that draw over 5' are not going to be easy to drysail.

Hi, Tacking22,

Maybe you would be happier with a trailer-sailer? Something like a Catalina 22? Or some other one? You get up in size to 30 footers, and I've never heard of dry-docking them. Most Calif. yards don't have storage facilities, though I do know of one or two here in Oz. Plus, you will find the charges for in and out fairly steep for weekend sailing. Also, the prep for being on land, and then re-launching.

My husband, Jim, had a Catalina 22, and for a while it lived on a trailer in front of his house. He lost patience with continually rigging it for sail, then un-rigging it to take home. So he found a marina berth for it. The shorter berths are less expensive than the longer ones, and he appreciated the step aboard and go sailing aspect.

You can have a shipping trailer built, but you are going to need a crane or a travel lift for launching, most boat ramps will not have adequate depth for you.

Ann
