Insurance for Atlantic crossing

I'm curious what do people do for insuring a boat for an Atlantic crossing. Ideally it would be something that covers the month of the trip from EU to US and then switch to regular US + Caribbeanb coverage. Any advice please.

Re: Insurance for Atlantic crossing

It will depend on you, residency and or citizenship and the registration of the vessel. Experience will also be a factor. More info required.

Thanks. It would be professionally captained and crewed to be hired for the crossing. The boat is US flagged and coming back to the US.

Re: Insurance for Atlantic crossing

Whilst chatting to my insurer at a boatshow one year, I asked this question.

The answer was they would right a policy for 6 months in Europe at cheap rates and 6 months in the US which is more expensive. To make it worth their while, the boat needed to be worth at least £50k and surprisingly they preferred a smaller yacht if there was only a couple of people on board to sail it.

The quote was about £1500 for the year which compared to the £300 I normally pay for UK coastal sailing.

Yes, however, that isn't really the risky bit. The extra premiums for the US probably reflect hurricanes and litigation risks, sadly.

Re: Insurance for Atlantic crossing

There are several firms that write policies that cover transats. The ones I have dealt with require at least 2 crewman with transat experience and a minimum crew size of 3.

It may be prudent to simply get a 6-month policy, or pay 1/2 now and 1/2 in 6 months.... Then cancel.
