Nautical-Newb Job Ideas

I have recently moved down from the interior of British Columbia to learn as much as possible about sailing and all things nautical. I have put up flyers to crew, and am out searching for any job which will either put me on the water or give me some transferable skills..

I have tried marinas and tug boat companies (no luck yet) but was wondering if the forum had any suggestions for jobs which would benefit the would-be-mariner?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Brandon

(Bonus points if you offer me a job )

It never hurts to walk the docks, something will pop up eventually, if you want to work on a fishing boat to start, usually you can find work in the fish plant, get on the unloading crew and that will put you in contact with the fishermen, and they will have a chance to observe your work ethic. Other wise work for a crane company or some other heavy equipment outfit maybe long shoring on the docks, anything that will put you in the proximity of the vessels. In your spare time pound the docks.

While you are waiting do a course at a professional level...refrigeration/AC, electrical and electronics people are very popular with the people with fancy boats in Caribbean anchorages and marinas. Many wives will not move unless the chart plotter, generator and A/C are working.
