I had relatively little experience and my only training was NauticEd online (very good, BTW) and she got us a London Marine (Lloyds) policy for less money and less restrictions than anyone else could quote.

Re: Sailboat Insurance

Timely question for me also.
We have liability only thru our homeowners (very reasonable cost and also a 1 million umbrella on the complete policy) and at the present time, accept the risk as we fix up our old boat. But as it gets better, the value is increasing and at some point will become more than I want to risk.
I keep seeing ever increasing liability and pollution insurance requirements. How much liability insurance do I really need? When traveling, we seldom stay in marinas but it seems that more countries are requesting proof of insurance.

Re: Sailboat Insurance

The thing about liability for pollution side... If you run aground or have a leak and lose fuel or other chemicals into the water.... If you are in a marina or anywhere where someone can see and report you... You are going to likely have to clean it up. It's not like the old days where I remember people pouring gas into the boat and spilling it haphazardly. And when that stuff hits the water, it can be big bucks to clean up. Luckily, it's not something that happens often ( individuals having to pay to clean) but it is happening more and more often. Also, your homeowners will typically have a pollution exclusion that makes it insufficient for that. Usually the coverage on the boat is subpar, and it typically costs more than just having a separate and proper boat policy.

Re: Sailboat Insurance

Shadowplay--how much does size of boat (capacity for doing damage to others) play into the liability policies?
