Supply Teaching

Just thought I'd check and see if anyone else on here does this...?

Over the last few years I have been able to work at will (come and go as I please...) and make enough to live on and put a bit by... done it in Thailand and England so far...

Any experience of doing this in other places?

Re: Supply Teaching

If by supply teaching, if you mean what we used to call substitute teaching. Yes, people do this. I suspect it depends on where you trained, how many places will hire you.

This sometimes works for psychological counseling, too, but there, one has to acquire the proper local credential beforehand.

PS. Nice to see you back on CF, SS.

Re: Supply Teaching

My Wife is a Retired Middle School teacher.
I have wondered if in our travels her services as a Teacher wouldn’t be wanted / needed.
Maybe in our case not so much for pay, if the kids really wanted to learn I bet she would enjoy it a little now and again.
In the US, substitute Teachers aren’t paid very well at all, better pay at McDonald’s flipping burgers.

True about the pay in the US. Don't you also need some sort of background check? And aren't those done locally, or by the state, so you'd have to do a new one in each new location?

I know someone who does substitute teaching as a retirement gig. It's certainly not for the money; he really enjoys it. But he only substitutes in one town; never elsewhere.

In the stuffy West, yes you do need background checks. In the Middle East and Far East they aren't so fussy - which is why all the teachers who are banned from working in the UK go there!!!
