What is it that you can sell, but still keep, to sell again. That's the secret to making money.

What happened to the 'Pioneer Spirit' you guys always brag about.. or is that yet another Hollywood myth...
Just buy a frickin old boat.. get out there and find out for yourself.. I did and eventually... after a long time, started to get the odd jobs here and there... free diving recovering stuff dropped over the side... scrubbing boat bottoms.. working in boatyards all over the place.. there's always yard owners wanting a bit of black cash in their pockets.. and hotels... now I even get occassional deliveries..
Its bludi hard.. but I've only 1 Ocean left to sail... bitta luck I'll sail another 20,000 miles this year... with full pay
Just hike your balls outa your shoes and DO IT...
Cut your hair and get a job. lol! I was told that my whole life by my grandfather!Never did get a job and when I cut my hair I felt like I was getting old! I havent had a "job" in over 30 yrs. but I have always "worked" very hard and got most of what I wanted...Wonder what I am going to do when I get old?..

Lol - Building one of those is on my "To do" list . Except slightly bigger (with Pyramids bigger is better ). Admittedly that somewhere around page 27 but nonetheless I think not as impossible as it sounds (the key is to make a profit - I think I may have cracked that bit).

Ozymandius stick that in yer pipe .

(note to self: get boat out of the harbour first and sort the other 26 pages ).

I know a guy who works as a carpenter for 7 months a year, and cruises the Bahamas for 5 months. He's been doing that for a couple of decades now. Seems like a good life.

Re: What is Everyone Doing?

As it turns out you can control outcomes and make plans that come to fruition, but these plans often require compromise. Most people who I know to be succesful cruisers have or have had productive careers. Many, like my wife and I, cruised about three or four months out of the year and were marina bound earning money most of the time. We did this for thirty two years aboard and we've ben fulltime cruising for the last ten years retired. We've known people of all varieties of professions living aboard and cruising at intervals between working.

Sex! You can sell that all over the world, it is a cash industry AND you don't have to cut your hair.

Programming is work you can do while underway, and it pays well.

This has been an amusing thread. Thanks to those really trying to help and thanks to those who are making me laugh. Im not sure what i want at this point which is why i am asking you all. I just really want to see the world and experience everything i can. Short of winning the lotto i will be lucky to even sail on my vacations. Though i am up for a promotion. It will mean more money but it will not mean more freedom. The idea with my question was just to get some possibilities. I thank everyone and please keep the posts coming.

Go read "The Four Hour Work Week" by Tim Ferriss. It should be required reading.

Re: What is Everyone Doing?

Go into the military, work 20 years and then pull down a monthly retirement income (join the Navy, and you may actually learn a few handy things to help you with sailing as well!). You'll still be in the 38-42 yo range (if you join early in life), plenty young enough to go cruising and enjoy it.

Buy a boat in the last few years of service, and get it ready to go. Then you can cast off all lines, with a boat that you know, and pulling in $2k-$4K a month- depending on what rank you retire in. Either way, you have at least $2k a month for doing nothing, except drinking rum punch and mai tais.

Not too shabby!
Cheers,

S/V Octopussy
