It needed to have direct daily flights from where we live in Spain. Never needed to rush over, but it was an easy way for her to come over for the weekend or for my wife to visit her.

If you need to get to them fast, you've either underestimated them, or you've failed them. Young adults don't need tending, old kids do.

If they are off to college, you've done your job, they need to learn to handle life's daily grind and the headaches all by themselves. They'll have to eventually, the sooner the better.

Do you still help with their homework?

I'm in the US, my son is attending college in London. He didn't think he was kid anymore when he left, and neither did his mom or me. He travels to and fro without much thought after the second trip. My wife didn't even watch the on-line flight tracker every minute for the 7 hour trip the last time he came home.

There's no way in any emergency situation we could be there quick enough to do anything anyway.

You can't hold them too close, lest they wither in your shadow.

Though the video chat apps have saved a few round trips I'm sure.
