Can I bring automatic PFD as carry on baggage

Travelling Friday to Galveston to meet charter, want to bring my own automaic PFD in my carry on baggage. I plan to disarm the auto fire mechanism, separate the cartridge from the PFD. Am I good to go or do I have to plan on leaving cartridge home and resupply in Galveston?

as long as the cartridge goes in your checked baggage (i.e. in the cargo hold) as opposed to your hand baggage you should be ok (or that is my understanding). You can always have the cartridge near the top of your checked baggage and ask when you check-in.

I guess with a few hundred stashed under the seats a few more can't hurt.
