Long Island sound transient mooring or slip

Hello I have a question
My wife and I.
we will be sailing our 26 foot sailboat from Bristol RI to the new home for our boat in New Haven , and since that is over a 90 mile trip on a sailboat that means we will have to stop for the night , and looking for some information on safe and nice places to hold up for the night
mooring , slip , anchor , you name it .
boat draws 6.5 feet or with the center board up only 3.5 feet of water

We have scheduled that trip for the weekend of June 1 and 2nd , so most likely if we would need a mooring or a slip , or a safe place to anchor , for the night .
We are going to tow a dinghy with us .
thank you
Andy

Fisher's Island is probably your best anchorage bet. Pretty much on the route and an adequate anchorage.

Hamburg cove up the CT river is a dynamic spot (pretty and quiet). The only problem is it is a bit of a detour up the river . . . worth it if you have the time to 'cruise', probably not if you are just on a delivery.

The point Judith harbor of refuge is right on the route and no detour, but may not be far enough along.

Re: Long Island sound transient mooring or slip

If you can get away on Friday afternoon and make Pt.
Judith, Harbor of Refuge you may be able to avoid any
approaches at night. Fishers Is. comes to mind, good idea
approoach in daylight 1st time around.
Also you want the current with you when you cross the race.
can go inside Fishers Is. Sound if you overnight and avoid race but must keep close eye on charts and not at night. Nasty rocks
about.
Some places to overnight with approx. distance.
Bristol to Pt Judith...20 nm
to Fishers Is...20 nm
to Ct River Saybrook...20 nm
to Duck Is. breakwater...8 nm
to New Haven...20 nm

Re: Long Island sound transient mooring or slip

I usually like to go to Salt Pond on Block Island, and in this season it isn't too busy. From there I might anchor up behind the breakwater in Stonington or over on Fishers Island, but it depends on what the current is doing in the Race and the timing.

If you can start Friday, but don't have a lot of time, Dutch Harbor on the West side of Conanicut Island is a very nice anchorage. It gets you a couple of hours on your way and shortens the run to Fishers Island.

Make sure to read your Eldredge's re: the currents in RI Sound and the Race. Timing the currents right will make for a much easier trip.

I second West Harbor Fishers Island. Not lots to do ashore, but I nice anchorage and good holding.

Closer to New Haven pick up a mooring in the lovely Thimbles.

+1 for Fishers Island... West Harbor provide good anchorage in anything but due North winds.. plenty of depth, gooey mud. no real shore facilities though.

Time your departure for slack tide and ride the current in as you head west..
