Couple of thoughts. As a brit I was used to the world being dominated by secular ideas, because N Europe is. Much of the rest of the world is not! Some have already mentioned the middle east but most of Spanish America is still dominated by catholicism, the southern states by evangelical and protestant christianity and it is taken very seriously compared to Europe. It is not uncommon the hear of violent religious persecution and intolerance in the states and South/Central America including persecution of of gay and lesbian people, sexual health clinics and others who challenge the taboos. Many of these people might find you interest deeply sinful. It is likely not to be illegal but culturally may be the same as wondering around in a miniskirt and crop top in the wrong place. While a European customs officer would simply be looking at the legality of your stuff I am not sure the same would apply in places like Panama or Alabama. So, no I don't think there is much chance of it being seen as contraband but I do think there is significant risk of it being culturally offensive and affecting your welcome and treatment by the locals.
Besides if, with the addition of the odd nautical curiosity like a cat'o'nine tails, anyone who cant turn the average boat into a dungeon lacks imagination!
I think you are confusing legal with socially acceptable.

I'm sure lots of older british ladies would be horrified at the idea and lots of young brazilian girls would shrug thier shoulders. I suspect your idea of the deep south has been tained by bad 1970's TV shows and a news media with an agenda. (now if you go to someones home or the local country bar and start getting in peoples faces...results may be different but thats more about inciting people to react.)

Customs officers (European or otherwise) are likely to just consider the local legality unless you purposely annoy them. If it's legal they may give you an odd look but otherwise, no issues.

Not my OP, so no I haven't sent it to SA.
It was enforced, which resulted in the law being struck down.

SA question was for the OP. This would be an epic SA troll.

Ahahahaaa... the biggest selling amusement in Spain in the '60's was a little padre with the bald patch dressed in a cassock.. pat his head and he got an erection.. there's phallic garden ornaments and all sorts.. its just not taken as seriously as some folk imagine.. outside fundamental Islamic States like Saudi where Sharia Law 'may' convert one to an Eunuch..
As for the S. Pacific.. I saw a few TV's/cross dressers in the native population at Nuku Hiva.. US Samoa and Vanuatu.. if there is any animosity it would more likely stem from the western obsession with exhibitionism and In Your Face..
These are older cultures with established etiquettes and brash crudity offends..

As Jim said, some countries may be a problem, but I wouldn't worry about the Pacific.
The ones I would be a little concerned are the Arab countries: Oman and anything up the Red Sea before Egypt. I think Egypt would be fine and turkey too.
I don't think the Asian nations would be a problem including Indonesia which is Muslim.

I wouldn't hide them. If there's a bag of anything that Looks like its hidden then that may show a guilty mind and that may make them wonder what else you have.

As to how many times a boat is thoroughly searched, if you look like a normal couple you probably never get a serious search. But if the boat smells of drugs and you look like an anachist and stand with folded arms asking 'by what authority are you searching...' then you will probably get searched in every port.

Whenever I get authorities come on the boat I am very free to tell them they can search anywhere. I don't do drugs or anything illegal so I have nothing to hide (except for 3 inflatable crew).

Ok I have to ask. Can they stand night watches for you?

As much as I want this thread to be real I would hedge my money that SA is where this came from.

Any votes for merging this thread and the single female skilled sailor thread...

Re: Adult toys onboard

SA means the sailing anarchy forum, right?
I'm not active on this forum and this is not a troll post but a real question
But if someone wants to link this thread in the sailing anarchy forum i'm totally fine with it.

Thanks for all the replies, even if most of them are not helpful but at least funny. But as there have been some serious answers in between, keep 'em coming

Does any of the equipment pass as sailing gear? I'd say this depends. There are ropes involved but someone who knows sailing would probably see that these are unusable on a sailboat (thin hemp roping). And then there's a lot of other stuff that definitely will not pass as sailing gear

We've always had some stuff onboard in the last years when we sailed in Europe, but we've only been boarded by customs once and they didn't search our boat, they were only interested in our diesel tank (to make sure we don't use cheaper tax-free diesel oil).

So it seems that we will have to do some more research country by country about local laws. Hopefully it is possible to find those laws on the internet and in english language.

If this works out as possible, we will take the legal stuff with us and store it in a bag under the forward berth. That's no hidden compartment but the logical place for this. I don't want to have all the stuff lying around as someone suggested, because i feel like this is offensive for some people. And i don't want to offend anyone.

Oh and by the way: Seems like our boat is used to those things. When we searched it through after buying it (the first and long-time owner died shortly before we bought it) we found some some vintage (but like new ) porn magazines from 1985 hidden between charts in the chart table. Probably the place where the wife never had a look in

Yes on it being SA...

Beyond the cautions of cultural laws, (and laws against restraints like cuffs) I don't think there's much advice to be given?

Some also might be reluctant to grab onto "suction cup affixed handholds"

I know a lot of skippers that don't look at their chart stacks either...
This is a fun thread to be sure... Thanks for posting!
