Question Do You Have Plants On Your Boat?

Just wondering how many liveaboards have plants on their boats and if so what types?

All sorts. About two dozen pots, when we are not sailing.

Re: Do You Have Plants On Your Boat?

Julie,

Quarantine confiscates plants and their dirt, so they are pretty temporary. But coastally, many grow their favorite herbs, I used to keep an aloe plant (against burns), and some people grow lots of veggies.

Yes

I keep herbs growing, basil, mint, parsley etc but not in soil. I use hydroponic beads. Again this is only when we are coastal as when we enter another country - all plants are confiscated.

Herbs of all sorts: basil, parsley, cilantro, thyme, mint, etc. Sprouts as well, although that may not qualify.

Re: Do You Have Plants On Your Boat?

Basil, culantro and mint on our boat. We have never had them confiscated or even bothered with, although they sit in the cockpit in full view of officials on board. I think that would be country-dependent, and none of the Caribbean, South or Central American countries have cared about it so far.

Re: Do You Have Plants On Your Boat?

We have a pretty protected cockpit and have some herbs and grass for the cat, wink wink. and some house plants in the salon. Just a little salt spray kills it dead tho. We have never had any officials say anything about the plants. Coming into the states they might. Even as a citizen you get the third degree about importing that dangerous European cheese and the like. i think they worry about a Socialism outbreak these days.

Re: Do You Have Plants On Your Boat?

spring onions can handle a little salt spray, but it helps to rinse with fresh water

Re: Do You Have Plants On Your Boat?

We carry a selection of herbs. If you decide to carry some, we use silcon bread baking pans. They're good because if they end up on the floor they don't break and they don't leak water.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"
