Rainfall.

Weather...
Ha ha my friend, you are not playing fair. Vancouver is a small city within a large regional district, to be sure i think it is 17 cities and municipalities that make up the greater Vancouver area. Rainfall along the southern coast is around 25-30 inches per year but as you get towards the mountains on the north it can go as high as 120 inches per year which is a bloody rain forest. That might explain why we are cruising, lol. It still is one of the few places on this earth that you can go sking in the morning, golf a round after lunch and then go sailing.

I havent been to London in a while. Most overseas people when they think of England assume everyone lives in London.

Right now in the Bristol area, its been raining most evenings/nights/mornings and been kinda gray and dull. Boat is out of the water and so my downtime ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz have been relegated to home or the back office. No the same as a warm cabin and gentle motion.

However you know your from Vancouver when you use the expression "sun break" and know what it means.

Sun break, eh! Well normally I would debate you but on that point, in winter, in Vancouver you win! Spring, summer and fall are actually quite nice normally but the winter is for those with webbed feet.

For the record, I LOVE Vancouver. Its just the weather reminds me of Manchester with the rain. However its usually warm enough to carry on regardless.

Oh, come on -- this is an urban legend, generated by centuries of English people complaining incessantly about the weather.

The climate in the SE part of the UK is actually quite all right. Very mild because of the Gulf Stream, which means very few hard freezes on the South coast, which means we sail year round and don't winterize our boats. Boats stay in the water year round without shore power or heating, without problems - it's that mild.

There's a lot of stormy weather because of the weather which rolls in from across the Atlantic, but there's plenty of sunshine, too. Sometimes there are long rainy periods, but as the statistics someone pointed out above show, the actual annual amount of rainfall in London is actually small, only 29 inches, so much less than New York (47 inches) or any other major U.S. city outside of the Southwest. Less than Chicago, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Boston, etc. Average Rainfall in World Cities - SkyscraperCity

It's true that London gets less sunshine (1600 to 1800 hours a year) than many cities in the U.S. (2500 for New York), but that's still a fair amount of sun, and for that you get much more pleasant and cooler summers, and much warmer winters. Cities on the U.K. South Coast like Southampton typically get over 2000 hours of sun. Average annual solar panel output is about the same between the SE UK and Florida (the milder temperatures boost efficiency, making up for somewhat fewer hours of sunshine).

The myth of a horrible London climate is spread by English people, who are pathologically inclined to complaining about the weather, but in fact the climate here is surprisingly pleasant. Palm trees grow in Southampton, and lemons and oranges in the Scilly Islands. You can sail year round, and in fact, I've sailed every weekend in January so far, and will sail this weekend, too Especially pleasant for someone who, like me, grew up in the U.S., are the very mild winters (London winters are even milder than those of Southern cities like Atlanta, GA), and the mild summers with gorgeously long days (because of the high latitude). I'll take it any day over what I grew up in; I especially hate the oppressively hot summers with 40+ degree days for weeks on end, which you get as far North as New York.

One thing you Brits never take credit for are your wonderful complexions, all of you look younger than your years. We can spot you a long ways off with those white legs and arms and it has to be a lack of sun.

Re: Forum trolls

The weather in Vancouver is truly terrible. I was out there a few winters ago to do a 3 week course. I swear it rained from the minute I landed to the minute I left. I couldn't wait to get back to Ottawa.

That's right I'd rather be in Ottawa in January than Vancouver.
