Hassle free anchorage in Clear Lake/Galveston Bay area?

I have a buddy who is planning a trip from Virginia to the Texas Gulf Coast area, and is hoping to 'hang around' for about a month. He has asked whether we have any good places to drop the hook for an extended period of time. As I have only anchored off for the occasional weekend, I did not have an answer for him - thought it might be a good question to bring to the forum...

A late (but first) reply.. with a question:
What's the draft of your friend's vessel?

In Galveston go to Offat's Bayou. It is just off the ICW west of the Bay Bridge. Channel is narrow-ish and about 5' deep. The Bayou is very deep, over 12'. There is also a convenience store on the Bayou with a boat dock....at least the dock was there before hurricane Ike. There is a supermarket walking distance too.

I would suggest looking into getting a slip in the Seabrook area. The sailing community that gathers at the Classic Cafe are an interesting and knowledgable bunch. Cabo and the Turtle Club are there for the hell raisers. Outriggers is a good place to dock and eat.

+1
Seabrook Marina has some 50' slips running at ~$400 per month. An alternative is the anchorage in Clearlake which is right off the DIY boatyard: there's been a couple of vessels zat there (one a Tiffany blue ketch) for some months now - not sure if it's a 'public' anchorage however.
