Re: How do you amuse yourself whilst at anchor?

I normally sip on some Sailor Jerry rum while I think about all the things I should fix.

Sometimes I look at my fishing pole while eating some canned tuna.

Occasionally I am invited to other peoples boats to watch the latest video of my anchoring fiascos.

But mostly I just enjoy the freedom to do whatever I like.

Clean, dinghy excursion (a must in any anchorage), snorkel, cook, snorkel, clean, repack things (there is always a better way to store stuff in the lockers), snorkel, read.

For my other half replace "clean" and "cook" with "fix things".

Re: How do you amuse yourself whilst at anchor?

Between a 36 year old boat and a 2 year old daughter I stay pretty busy. But generally I'd say these keep me busy:

- writing
- reading
- working (business / money making job)
- working (boat maintenance)
- snorkeling - swimming - scuba diving
- adventuring around on shore

I try to workout every day, alternating between lifting weights and running. That will take a two hour chunk out of your day right there between getting ready, doing your thing, and cleaning up afterwards.

Fix a deck leak, check the oil, write for an hour, read in the evening, play some board games or watch a movie with the family and you've got yourself a full day. Preparing meals can be a means to an end as well if you're into that.

Re: How do you amuse yourself whilst at anchor?

Reality is while I am stuck at the dock waiting to take off I like to bug people on forums.
Any over night stops I must go to the local markets. I am a foodie!
As a single or short handed sailor I so enjoy the company of others over a meal or drink after a few days on the water. Swap stories make up lies the whole works.

Havent went to the kindle or nook yet. Something about the paper smell of a Tim Dorsey novel makes me feel happy. But I am open to reviews or suggestions on what the best e-reader is.

Re: How do you amuse yourself whilst at anchor?

Well I love to cook, try out new recipes, read cookery books...

We read a lot, real books and Kindle. We download a lot of lectures from places like Harvard and MIT, TedTalks etc when in reach of wifi and enjoy listening to others spout forth their expertize on a wide variety of subject via the ipod.

We fish, repair things, plan new trips, fish, set crab or lobster pots, but a lot of the time we just think. Thinking is something we never had much time to do in our previous lives and we really enjoy the luxury!

No Kindle - I can read a book in Kansas.

Fix, Provision, explore, dive, fish, party with your neighbors. Watch the sky, be glad you don't have to clock in in the morning.

Re: How do you amuse yourself whilst at anchor?

When we were in a house working ridiculous hours we still all had time to do what we want.
No we are on a boat cruising someone has stolen a good few hours from the day. There is never enough time to do everything we want.

Someone would do well writing a boatie version of the "Kama Sutra". There is certainly a few positions you will find yourself in that are not in the book and if for any reason you see a female head going up and down quickly out of a hatch that is position 47.

Re: How do you amuse yourself whilst at anchor?

I play steelguitar (dobro), guitar, banjo, acoustic bass and my wife plays mandolin, guitar, sings great and ocasionally we take her full sized keyboard piano. We also play backgammon and take times cooking. We always like the reaction when some one trys to anchor too close , that's when the really bad bluegrass banjo playing starts out on the deck, usually they move on further away without a word and I don't usually have to start yodeling

Other than music I nap lots

What do I do whilst at anchor? My wife generally refers to it as 'farting around'.
