Re: How much propane do go thru?

We averaged about 6 weeks to each 4.5kg (10 lb) cylinder. Cooking dinner every night, boiling water numerous times a day for tea/coffee etc and baking bread/cakes or a roast a few times a week.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

Family of 5, cooking 3 meals a day. We use our oven about 3 times a week for baking bread or other foods.

We get about 3-4 weeks depending on how much baking we do!

Re: How much propane do go thru?

For the years we have been out - our average is 40-45 days for 10# tank - and we actually write down when we change them our so it is somewhat accurate

Re: How much propane do go thru?

Varies wildly depending...
- Summer: Almost indefinitely as we use an electric skillet and crock pot on the back deck to avoid adding heat to the cabin. If we do use the stove, cooking is as quick as possible to avoid extra heat.
- Spring & Fall: May 2-3 months as we do more cooking on the stove and do some baking.
- If away from dock (any season): about a month as we have a propane/electric fridge and at dock it runs on electric.
- No propane heating but in our 27' RV, we get about a month out of a 30lb tank if the lows are down to around 40F. At -5F, we go thru a tank a day. The boat insulation is far worse though and around 25F is the coldest we've dealt with but we were running the electric heat.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

Limited experience: we just spent our first two months on the new boat. One of the first things I did was to make sure both bottles were full of LPG. It ran out about two days before we came home.

Two people aboard, used the stove to make coffee and toast every day, tea fairly often, and meals perhaps a third of the time.

Not a long timeline but on par with what others are saying.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

I live aboard and use propane for cooking and a demand water heater. When I was cooking only a 20 lb tank lasted about 2 months. Now, heating water for showers and dishes, a 20 lb tank lasts a little better than a month perhaps as long as 6 weeks.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

I'm by myself, but I cook for the guys around me. I go through 2- 20# a month. I bake goodies a lot. In extremely cold weather I'll use to take the chill off the cabin. This month I didn't cook so much because I have a $400 car fix. And I'll be finished with the one 20# at the end of next week.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

Cooking only in the PNW, a tank would last probably 6+ weeks living aboard.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

Interesting how many of us have similar habits ie. gas usage. I have two 4.5kg tanks aboard which will get me approx 2months combined. I had this on my last boat as well and two months often was not enough as I wasn't always able to get lpg or natural gas refills.

I carried and will do again now another 7.5kg tank which I would refill my plumbed in tanks from using:

Having the ability to carry more gas takes the pressure off.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

zengirl,

Since you've been cooking for others, which takes more propane, 3 1/2 dozen cookies or 2 loaves of baked bread?

Tnx. for the answer.

Ann

Seems to be some form of concensus here... rare for CF.
I am surprised at the consistency of the answers here.

With 3 to 5 people on board eating most meals on board, we get a bit more than a month out of a 4.5kg cylinder, maybe six weeks. More than that, if there is no baking, which uses a ton of gas compared to using the cooktop.

Note that we don't boil water with gas; we use an electric kettle. If we were boiling water with gas, then I guess we would get less than a month.

I wish I had a little bigger gas locker. Mine holds two 4.5kg Calor butane cylinders, which fit loosely. I can just wedge in one of the slightly bigger Finnish/Estonian propane cylinders, but I can't fit the next size up Calor bottle, which is too tall. Two months of gas is not really very good when you're on a long cruise in different countries with different gas bottles. I am forced to carry a Finnish/Estonian bottle in addition to my two Calor bottles, which means one bottle has to live in an awkward place behind my transom platform.

Re: How much propane do go thru?

We only use the gas to cook, 2 people. Here in Brasil we use the 13 kg bottles propane, exactly 2 month one last . We prepare our meals and every other day we bake bread.
