We are wanting to obtain boat insurance to satisfy marinas when we are there for a period of time most marinas require at least liability insurance to rent slip, we have been calling insurance companies most dont insure boats over 20- 30 yrs old also dont seem to like boats over 30-35 feet as in progressive as one example looking to insure 1989 catalina 42 also we maintain a residence out of us and also have a residence in us we dont have us drivers license which boat us doesnt approve of and others as well . Any ideas around some of this stuff.

So many strikes against you there. It will be a challenge.

You might want to explore a self-insurance bond to see if that might cover your liability needs, although that will require you to show significant assets. And it gets very expensive if someone has a claim against you.

My marina requires $500,000 liability insurance.

My boat is a 1974 Bristol 27.

Insurance is with State Farm and is around $12/month.

I have 40+ year old 33' sailboat. When I decided liability only made sense I called USAA. They directed me to Progressive-They own Progressive, I believe, and use it for boats, motorcycles, etc. Bob

Call Ashley at Wells Insurance out of North Carolina (910.726.2327 ). She was able to get me insurance for my 32 year old Moody. It wasn't cheap but it's something.

^^^^ same insurance here.

I have a 1956 wood schooner 36'. Don't remember rate but it's comparably low and Safe Harbor at Newport RI accepted it without a second glance.

Re: how to get boat insurance boat is over 35feet boat is over 30 yrs old

I had Geico through a third party insurer and Geico dropped using 3rd party providers, so I contacted them directly and they wanted a survey before they would insure me, so I went with my homeowners insurance, Erie for a boat policy. It wasn't the greatest as it didn't cover accidental fuel spill. When the Erie policy was due to renew, out of curiosity, I contacted BOAT/US (Geico) and they wrote me a policy, agreed hull value, no survey except in 6 years when my boat turns 30, I'll need one. Go figure........
