Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

I learned long ago its the water temperature which determines how well you sleep. It keeps the night time temperatures and humidity up.

The solution is simple. If the water temp is over 32 C, pull the anchor up and go somewhere else.

It warmed allllll the way up to 25C today! With 39% humidity.

Down to 15C tonight. Might use a blanket.

Yes, it will be your turn to laugh when the Vevor diesel heaters go down and I’m frozen in a few months. Ha ha ha

We now have A/C running off the batteries. Feels like cheating…

We have a boat with plenty of ventilation,
Overhangs over windows
Tinted glass
And pull down shade outside windows and inside windows

No AC needed even on 40c days.

So ventilation and shade make the temperature go below 40c on a 40c day?

Ventilation and shading make it manageable, we can live without A/C
Vs
Hotbox boats without shading and ventilation and angled windows copping the sun's full rays that actually make it get hotter.

Think of houses
The old Queenslander style of house with central breezeway front to back, large overhangs and reflective roof is a far cooler home in summer than the typical modern home with none of those features and needing to rely on air-conditioning.

I have owned both house types in hot climates and from a temperature comfort level standpoint, the old QLDer is superior.

Our boat has many of the same attributes

Yes, but at 40 degrees it still ain’t fun and you can’t do much more than sit and hope it goes away. Only very few people are able to do physical work in 40 degrees.

Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

Move East:

Living on the wrong side of a time zone’s boundary can have negative consequences on a person’s health and wallet, according to research [1], published in the Journal of Health Economics.

The fading of natural light causes the body to release melatonin, a hormone that induces drowsiness. As a result, people on the eastern side of a time zone, where the sun sets earlier, tend to go to bed earlier [average of 19 min.], than those on the western side, of the same time zone.

The problem for folks who go to bed later, is that they generally cannot make up lost sleep on the back end. Work and school have set start times, whether you live in Pecos or Panama City.
Panama City, Fla. is located on the far eastern end of the Central time zone, while Pecos, Tex., sits on the far western side. In Pecos, the sun sets more than an hour later, than Panama City.

People on the late side [western] of sunset across U.S. time zones were 11 percent more likely, on average, to be overweight and 21 percent more likely to be obese. Diabetes was more prevalent, and the risk of heart attack increased by 19 percent. Breast cancer rates were slightly elevated, too — about 5 percent higher than average.

“As long work hours, work schedules, school start times and the timing of TV shows can create conflicts between our biological rhythms and social timing, our findings suggest that reshaping social schedules in ways that promote sleeping may have non-trivial effects on health and economic performance,” the researchers wrote.

Sure, but when we have 40c days outside we are a bit less than that inside
And usually with a cooling breeze - if not a simple $10 pedestal fan or desk fan does the job.
No AC required

But we never had it in our house, our classic car didn't have it and motorcycles don't have it either, so never got used to having a/c

Thankfully, actual 40c days are only a few a year in our cruising grounds
Same Lattitude as Florida but Southern hemisphere 27degrees S to 10degrees S

Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

Depending on the climate we're used to, many of us can't handle a 40* C (104* F) day without air conditioning. Even in the shade with a fan, it's unbearable unless the humidity is very low.

Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

The best solution is to snowbird it. Go north in the summer and south in the winter. Even if it is a hot day in New England the breeze off the ocean remains cool and downright cold in Maine, and after dark there is hardly a night I don't need to pull up at least a light blanket. We supposedly had a record hot summer this year yet it was very comfortable at anchor most days out on the islands of Massachusetts. It's usually at least 10 degrees cooler on the islands. One trick is to seek out anchorages with low land between you and the prevailing breeze, and avoid ones where the current will turn the boat away from the wind.
