Insurance

When you have the dream of living aboad, you must prepare for the delima of insurance. If you have only 365 days of experience, not owned or docked a boat of the size required to live aboard, you may have difficulty in getting insurance. Although many states don't require insurance; but many marinas do. If you own a land based property you can use home owners to cover boat so you can ease transition. I didn't and now insurance is a major obsticule inthe dream.

It may be important to note that the insurance required by marinas is almost always liability. As, with a Florida registered boat, I'm asked to pay 8% of my hull value per year for full hull coverage, I purchase liability only and I've saved half the value of my boat to date. Judgements must be made and risk must be managed. 'take care and joy, aythya crew

And that's just boat/hull/liability insurance - how about medical insurance? Your home country medical insurance is not likely to be recognized in another country.

I can use my home owners insurance to cover my boat?

I have a house in Oklahoma we pay insurance and insurance for the boat thru BoatUS...but it doesnt really cover our personal items, was also thinking about getting renters insurance ( since we rent a slip ).. BUT now I will look into my home owners insurance as well,.....interesting.

There are major USA insurance companies that handle multiple lines of coverage including home owners; liabillity; motor vehicle; and recreational vehicles (which includes boats). If you have your home owners coverage with such a company you can normally get a very good rate on boat insurance. Normally the boat insurance coverage is only for USA coastal waters and the Bahamas. Also the coverage is usually only up to $100K on hull coverage. These insurance companies sometimes act as brokers for boat insurance from other sources for more expensive boats.
- - If you want/need coverage outside these limits then you deal with international maritime insurance companies that sell their insurance through brokers/agents such as I.M.I.S. or Blue Water or dozens of other brokers/agents.
