Interpretation?

This statement was made about an Island Packet sailboat for sale, and I’m stumped, really….

“The Engine was replaced due to water intrusion from the air conditioning system that stayed below the floorboards but damaged the original engine. The water was pumped out of the bilge within four hours”.

1. How could water infiltration (especially from a/c?) create enough damage to require engine replacement?

2. What’s the real deal; is there collateral damage that I’m not considering, that would force a sale? ?warped flooring? Mold?

Thx!

Re: Interpretation?

Sounds like they are saying the boat flooded due to an A/C problem (burst raw water cooling hose, maybe?), but the water level never rose above the floorboards. High enough to ruin the engine.

My interpretation. But you need to be asking the seller. His “interpretation” is the only one that matters.

Re: Interpretation?

I'd ask:

was the transmission replaced, as well? If not pickled right away there could be lingering transmission issues later on.

were ancillary engine parts replaced, as well? Such as the alternator, electronics, or re-used from the old engine?

what about wiring? any wiring in or around the engine compartment or bilge should be re-done.

On the positive side, you're getting a new engine.

Good points well worth citing.

How far below the floorboards is the IP engine? How much of it was submerged? I'd think either way they'd rebuild it, not replace it. I'm suspicious.

Re: Interpretation?

My hunch, sea water A/C line broke. Filled boat with sea water to dip stick line or vent. Found some point of intrusion.

I would approach cautiously.
