Island Packet 40 Heating Suggestion

Hello all
we are planning on cruising many areas, including temperate zones. Cabin heating is part of the plans, incorporating capacity to heat our 5 gallon water heater with the same unit. (We currently heat via the engine heat exchanger or when connected to shore power).
The range available to the small Australian NZ market (when compared to Europe / Nth America) seems limited.
Webasto and Espar units seem to be suitable, and are available in Australia. However feedback from people who have had experience with units in other parts of the world would be gratefully received.
Thank you
Lester

Re: Island Packet 40 Heating Suggestion

Looks like you are looking at hot-water radiator systems. These are easier to install, as the hoses are much smaller than the air ducts. The forced air systems heat the boat faster. We had an Espar forced air system for 10 years. It draws a lot of current on startup and shut-down for the glow plugs -- 20-25amps. The fan used about 4.5/5amps when on high, and I think about 2 amps on low. Diesel usage was low. The heater would heat and dry the boat very quickly. They require very clean fuel. There's an inline fuel filter that you should mount in a place that is easy to swap, and just do it annually. Our Espar was pretty reliable. A friends boat had a Wabasto and he was always complaining. YMMV.
