Re: Month 23 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Before we retired in 91 we took scuba lessons & certified bought equipment for the event of getting free from traps. Best insurance we had because we never got tangled in a trap cruised the Bahamas and Keys for11years!

Re: Month 23 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Provisioning in Maine - Other than the ones listed, there is decent food available in Castine, Belfast, Stonington. NE and SW Harbors on Mt Desert vie for the world most expensive grocery shopping. We priced a jar of spagetti sauce which turned out to be $13. Needless to say we passed on that particular delicacy. There are wonderful farmers markets if you hit harbors on the right day. When on Mt. Desert, take the free shuttle to Bar Harbor (Bah Habah in local dialect) and there is a good Hannifords super market within strolling distance.
Jonesport had a good store, Winter Harbor has a decent store within walking distance even closer if you go to the inner harbor rather than the Yacht Club moorings. Once east of Jonesport, there really isn't anything that I know of. Forget trying Cutler. The store closed years ago. The coast is worth exploring. Provision then go!

Re: Month 23 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Thanks again SB. Hamilton Marine uh, now I understand why you've saved up for 4 months.

I was in Maine a week ago cruising on a friends boat out of Boothbay, mine is still in refit mode. It is fine cruising grounds for July/August - are you going downeast? Bar Harbor, Roque Is or Machias Bay maybe? Excluding Bar Harbor not a lot of places to spend money, but beautiful.

Hope you keep posting, it is a service to all. I have to ask thou, how do you get a $33.15 credit on fees? That has never happened to me before !

Re: Month 23 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Only spent $59 at Hamilton Marine and almost half was a boat hook. They didn’t really have the stuff on my list. So I put the “saved” money into lobster rolls.

I use my credit card for 95+% of things. I get cash back each month and I put that into “fees”

If you are interested in a hooka system, drop me a line. I've got a Brownie system with the upgraded engine, two hoses to 70', and two emergency pony tanks and regulators. I believe my cost was around 3.4K. I'd part with it for about 1K. Works great, like new condition.

BTW - I've have lobster rolls in 4 places the past 2 weeks. Near as I can tell "market" price means $19. For that same $19 you may or may not get fries and coleslaw.

But I just had a lobster roll with chips and slaw at Time Out Pub here in Rockland for $11.95 that was as good as the $19 places! So we wanted pizza for dinner, but I feel dual lobster rolls are on menu instead.

You know the problem with lobster rolls?? You eat one and an hour later you want another.

Re: Month 23 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Thank you SB1 for these updates.
I have a question on discipline: do you keep all receipts then tally them or just make notes? I have tried (and failed) to keep a tab on my spending and I am looking at better ways to do it. Thanks for this.
