Our cruising costs - month 29 for a middle-aged couple on a 30' boat.

Ahhh, if only every month could be as frugal as when we are in the Bahamas.

In January we moved through Eleuthera and into the Exumas. It was a VERY inexpensive month, even with a quarterly life insurance payment and a few annual subscriptions paid up front. We’ll see what next month brings.

Here we go:

Groceries/Non-food Groceries/Alcohol: $279.94

Gasoline/Diesel: $63.03 (filled our jerry jugs in Staniel Cay – won’t need to do it again until we get ready to leave)

Cell data, iCloud storage, and Garmin inReach subscription: $251.76 (This is high. We are keeping our AT&T account in the U.S. active while we are away, plus we are paying for a Skype number and a plan with Aliv.)

Restaurants/Entertainment: $11.70

Medical: $16.12

Laundry: $9.00

Subscriptions: $213.26 (New York Times, Microsoft, etc.)

Quarterly Life Insurance Payment: $220.75

Random Items: $61.15 (trash disposal, etc.)

Total: $1,126.71

2021 Monthly average: $1,126.71

2020 Monthly average: $2,758.15

2019 monthly average: $3,457.97

2018 monthly average (September – December): $4,465.95

Monthly average since starting to cruise: $3,227.03

I hope this is helpful.

You guys really need to go in more and eat some cracked conch or something and help the economy

Here in Alicetown today we went to electronics store and got a wifi and month service $185, went to grocery and got a dozen eggs, loaf of bread, bag of chips, 1 can of spam $20.90. Yesterday we went to the local restaurant that we had to ourselves and had 4 beers and grilled lobster $83.

Stop being so selfish :-)

We’re spreading it around in the grocery stores. But two thumbs up for the Bahamian Mac and Cheese at Sammy’s in Rock Sound!

Thanks for the info. It's really great to see the breakdown and costs each month. Appreciate it!

I recall that you have a blanket rental car insurance policy - could you share the provider? I rent cars a lot and that sounds like a great idea.

We have a non owner’s auto policy through Geico. Is that what you’re referring to? We bought it so we wouldn’t get tossed into the high risk pool when we buy a car again in the future. It does have some auto rental coverage too which is nice.

Kudos for finding ways to lower your living cost each year. Keep it up and you may eventually start making money living on board. Is there room for another sailing blog!?
I'd avoid the mooring balls on Waderick Wells Cay in the marine park. It cost us $150 to park there one night.
cheers mate,
jim

Not sure what boat you have, Jim, but if you spent $150 for a night then your boat is in the over 90' category. For @cthoops, they would pay $25 a night for a mooring as per the BNT website.

CThoops - exactly what I was asking. As a non-car owner in NYC, I rent a lot to get to boats. I will be definitely checking it out.

Really appreciate that you post this info to help the rest of it out.

Thank you. This is really interesting to those of us who are not as disciplined at accounting. Thanks.
