Re: Pet hates that people do

About 10 years ago, I was in an anchorage and a 52' motorboat came in. They anchored at a respectable distance, but didn't put out much scope, or even set their hook. Just a little before sunset, I rowed over and suggested they drop some more line since the wind can sometimes pipe up. About three AM, a gale came in and they hit my spare anchor on the sprit. I jumped on deck stark naked yelling at them to wake up, and they hauled out and left. I went back to a rolly bed. In retrospect I was kinda embarrassed, since they had kids on board.
Fast forward about four years, and the same boat is in another anchorage. I rowed over to apologize, if the same crew was onboard. They were, said they'd never been so terrified and that they'd gone home and immediately took two classes on anchoring. I asked why they didn't repair the gouge my anchor had left on their beautiful boat, they said for a reminder.
I guess my pet peave is people who don't learn to properly anchor, yet exercise their right to do so.

I've been standing riding my dink, for 35 years.
Why do I it?
It keeps me dry.
Provides better vision.
More space for other people.
Feet don't get tangled up in anchor rode, etc.

Try it, you might like.....c'mon over to the dark side....

Re: Pet hates that people do

Among the most annoying is overuse of the AIS. In a crowded harbor with numerous close boats, the AIS alarm is constantly sounding so it's meaningless. Same when heading into a marina or to a fuel dock. Perhaps the AIS is like a new toy so it's left on even when the boat is docked and the owner has left for the week. And why does one need to transmit AIS when on a narrow canal during mid-afternoon? AIS is a great idea but, due to gross overuse, it's become the marine version of "Chicken Little" or "The Boy who Cried Wolf". It's so overused that I turn mine off unless operating at night or in marginal weather.

Once again, no. AIS alarms aren't useful in crowded conditions. But crowded conditions are when AIS is often most useful. That's when you're most likely to have a question about another boat's intentions. And those questions can be resolved much more easily if the boats in question know each other's names for easy contact, etc. In my mind, if you're not tied to a dock, there's no reason not to have AIS broadcasting (if equipped). Even at anchor it should not be turned off.

It's really hard to get my eight foot oars out of the water standing up.

Saw that on another video series and I am glad to see that the news is covering it and the police are looking into it. The sheer laziness is astounding.
