You must have read my posts on the subject. 13 rubbish bags full of good stuff into a dumpster!

I had friends come around to take anything for free and they would turn their noses up at my household goodies.

I finally DEMANDED everyone who visited the hous MUST take something away with them.

I offered 2 friends their Christmas presents back (it was the beginning of February) and one said NUP! The other wanted her present back - a vase - because she really liked it when she bought it.

The worst things that one throws away, or gives to charity etc, is all those expensive things you felt you MUST have in the previous life. That rug that was $300; the artwork you negotiated down from $1,000 to $800; the $2,000 TV you got $50 for on eBay!

You will find getting rid of everything is very cathartic. It is a wonderful feeling albeit tinged with bitterness.

Good luck with it.

Yours and everyone else's. I came to the conclusion about 2 months into this that in order to break clean I have to think of everything tying me to land as junk. $2500 brand new dining room suite? Nope, Junk. 40 years of priceless minutia? Nope, junk. I tried to sell some stuff but the buyers just kept pissing me off. Never show up or show up 2 hours late when I'm ready to go out to dinner. Then they get pissed at me for telling them I have to leave, come back tomorrow. The one I really loved was the one that wanted a $25 discount because he had to drive 50 miles to pick up the $500 bed I was selling for $75, the cost of gas being so high and all. I gave that bed to a friend rather than sell it to him at any price.

Re: 30 days till I'm outta here!

Congratulations Don.
I've been following your progress with some interest because we're roughly on the same journey, but half a planet away.
House is sold and we've got a month to vacate.
I've got a business I run from home and have to get it sold before we can go boat hunting. I was hoping I'd have a buyer before we have to move out, but it's looking unlikely, so that means finding a rental for a while which is a total PITA.
We're offloading furniture and junk to family and friends and probably will try to sell a bit of stuff, and end up giving it away anyway
Can't wait to get out there and start our new life.
Cheers,
Vic

Congradulations Don,
Make short work of getting rid of it all and have a great trip to the east coast. I am
SURE your new boat will speak to you when you first see it. Enjoy the moments.

That's just great Don. I'll look forward to hearing it's day 0 and you're on Long Island walking the deck of a real beauty.

Re: 30 days till I'm outta here!

My sister came to visit today, haven't seen her since 2004. I was able to offload some "junk" on her, a copy (in oils) of "Starry Night" and a piece of the Berlin Wall. Sounds surreal but it's true. I commissioned the Starry Night about 30 years ago from a friend I knew in Virginia. I Chopped the stone (size of your fist) out of the wall on November 9, 1989. I gave it to my brother-in-law, he's a history teacher, he almost cried. At least it will be given a good home.

Good luck selling the business. That one last thing is like an Albatross around your neck. You are in limbo waiting for that one last thing to be taken care of. I received an offer, and accepted it, now I have to wait 17 days before he can not back out without forfeiting his deposit. Then it's another 13 days till it's all final and we close. Then I have 3 days to vacate. I'll be gone as soon as the last truck is on it's way to Goodwill.

I bought a small caravan to live in till I find my boat. It's only 19' long and is more cramped that any boat I've seen. When I finally get on the boat it will feel like a castle.

Re: 30 days till I'm outta here!

I too took the tax break with donating cars, and everything household. What they wouldn't accept I threw in a dumpster. The only thing I kept was 3 decades of hand tools for my trade, and artwork. This time I put the prints in a chart tube, and they are with me, threw away the frames.BEST WISHES in it finalizing smoothly.....i2f

Fingers crossed it all goes well for you Don, we are selling a property that will open up our new life on the water, it can be frustrating to be so near...and yet so far! Ive had offers so feel quite positive! Great time for you to be buying a boat, dont be intimidated by any brokers or anyone else for that matter,.......look forward to reading how you get on, best, Pablo

Re: 30 days till I'm outta here!

congrats... I to am out of here as soon as i get thru with court..I didnt get a chance to throw anything away, the girl I was going to take with me I caught cheating on me with others, so kicked her to the curb...then she came back scorned and stole every thing she could haul off even said I stole my own 65 convertable mustang.and has got me wraped up with legal issues that are a total waste of time.she is trying to drag me thru the courts... it will make sailing away that much sweeter..hope to see you all out on the water soon...wish me luck DVC

Re: 30 days till I'm outta here!

65 Mustang Convertible? Nope, Junk.

Unless of course you were going to sell it to buy the boat.

My big fear is getting out to the real search and buying something I don't want.

Good luck Don - I'm envious, as I'm a long way away. But will be following your progress.
