Those Simple Ideas Liveaboards Have to Improve Life

SS MAINTENANCE: Just curious did anyone try my mixture of VIM and cgeap car polish to keep SS pristine?

Thanks: I recommend them on all types of sailboats, even modern designs. They are excellent for laying off halyards on windy nights, stowing extra ropes, like heaving lines—which you can never find when you need them quick.
Not to mention the time old method of acquiring extra crew...
No belaying pins (yet), but we glassed in a board in the lazarette, then attached several 4" nylon cleats. A small loop of rope through the eye of the cleat passes through any coil, similar to those fancy rope bags you can get for your cockpit. Except that we can put two coils on each cleat. All of our extra line is easy to find, and uses space that would otherwise be wasted.

ANTI FOULING In the East African cruising area very hard to obtain anti fouling paint! I discovered that the paintbsold was often diluted with water and often the red anti fouling paint was replaced in its container by red oxide. It was applied to my cat by a reputed chandler here. I assumed I had proper anti fouling on my cat when it was red oxide primer! It actually works but I am worried about environmental impact. The wooden dhows in this area, I discovered, use red oxide as bottom paint for many years.
