Travelling Outside the US

I have travelled extensively throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, and South America about 10-15 years ago. My wife and I want to start cruising outside the US in Central and South America. The question that I would post; Is there a good place other than the state department that would have current up to date political, social, and economic conditions?

Maybe its just age talking but the world does not seem as safe as it was 15 years ago. I am hoping there are other more experienced cruisers who could convey some of their experiences.
