been there, we sailed from Shotley at 1030 on the 6th Jan, enroute to Liverpool, snow blizzards around Dover, at 0200 lost all electrics, hove to, and managed to drag one of the bow thrust batteries down aft so that engine could be started. Continued sailing at 0300, and into Gosport at 0900, now £400 poorer, after purchase two new batteries, and electrician to sort out wiring problem. Expect to leave Gosport 0600 tomorrow. It were that cold last night that the spray was freezinG
Good fun though

Not In Gosport . . . but . . .

We are in East Cowes Marina, approx' 9 M west. the wind is northerly F4-5. Dry with a chance of snow tomorrow.
Nice and warm down below with the diesel stove keeping us in a shirt sleeve environment.

Ain't life great?

Hi Enigma - we're in Ipswich too - though not aflopat at this moment! We've done a lot of hacking about the channel and estuary in January and october and remember it well. RG is currently in Rome, and we aim for Malta next winter. Send a PM if you fancy a drink!

Also useful for strangers/visitors is http://www.southamptonvts.co.uk for the harbour master at Southampton VTS, ABP Southampton which gives more info, especially the BIG Ships, container and Cruise and their deep water problems and manouvring around the Bramble Bank.
Fines etc for crossing in front of commercial boats are likely to be applied. They have no options to change speed or heading. Ferries are very good and patient. especially in the summer.
New breakwater on the east of Cowes entrance, fees for mooring there.
This includes SIS info on an easy Map etc. And all the local weather bouys.
If you want a beer go up the river from Cowes to the Folly Inn. Mooring and Water taxi about 16 quid, good food, good company, showers etc. Though Shephards Marina at Cowes is not much dearer and posh, but a walk into posh Cowes. TOO COOLDD TO W W ALK K.

Just an update: the weather is thawing out today, ise melting, marina free of ice, raining in between snow showers so the snow is vanishing...
